“I lost over 120 pounds — but that number only makes sense when you know where it started.”

For Bryon, the decision to change his life came after witnessing the devastating effects of chronic illness in his family. Those experiences became a wake‑up call to stop waiting for “someday” and choose his health.

His journey began with Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) surgery at MercyOne Des Moines Bariatric Surgery, a turning point both physically and emotionally. Over time, weight loss came through structure and learning how to live in a new body — but the path wasn’t linear.

Life, stress, mental health and biology all played a role and Bryon experienced weight regain. Later, GLP‑1 medication helped him regain momentum — not as a shortcut, but as a tool alongside mindful eating, movement and mental health support.

Bryon’s takeaway is simple: lasting change isn’t about shame or perfection. It’s about compassion, consistency — and accepting help.
