Welcome to our stretch series where we show you some great stretches you can do to help your horses at home!

Today, we’re focusing on the TMJ! If you saw our last post, you know how important that little joint can be. Doing this stretch for 5-10 second will help loosen up those muscles and keep your horse more comfortable.

Why is the TMJ so important??

You may think the hocks, stifles, hips, or coffin joints would be the most important, but an argument can be made for the TMJ as well! The temporomandibular joint (hinge point of the jaw) has more proprioceptive nerves (nerves that tell the horse where their body is is in space and what it’s doing) than any other point in their body. If a horse is “out” in their TMJ, not only can it cause pain, but it can stop a horse from getting all the proprioceptive info they need to perform their best!

Horses that tend to have reoccurring TMJ misalignment may brace on reins, chew/chomp on the bit, have issues taking the bit, or chew their food awkwardly.

Did you know MOST horses have ulcers? UC Davis estimates 50-90% of horses have them!
🤠 Spoiler Alert- We can help! 🤠

Ulcers are sores in a horse’s digestive tract. A veterinarian can scope and tell you if a horse has them in their stomach, but they can get ulcers further down in the digestive tract, far past the reach of the scope.

Ulcerguard can offer some relief by slowing the production of gastric acid (which horses produce 9 gallons of per day 😳), but slowing down acid production can impede digestion. Also, prolonged use of omeprazole (the active ingredient) leaches calcium from the body, which can lead to colic and brittle bones- not to mention is costs close to $1200 per month!

So what’s the solution? Bentonite clay! Bentonite clay will pack into an ulcer, protecting it from acid, and it provides minerals to help with healing. We offer individual or bulk supply of bentonite at just $25 for a 60 day supply!

“My horse feels like his front end is moving separate from his back end”

What do all of these complaints have in common? They are symptomatic of a subluxated pelvis! The pelvis can go out two different directions (the hips front to back and the SI up and down).

Let’s talk lasers!
Red and infrared light therapy is used in every one of our chiropractic and cranial sacral therapy sessions. Most of you have probably heard of red/infrared light therapy AKA cold laser therapy, but what are some of the benefits?

Red light therapy works on the surface of the skin, while infrared light penetrates much deeper. Infrared light improves the functionality of the mitochondria of each cell. With a higher functioning mitochondria, injuries and muscles soreness can recover faster and more efficiently.

It also decreases inflammation and improves circulation by increasing production of nitric oxide, which helps relax the arteries and prevents blood from clotting and clumping in the vessels. Nitric oxide also combats free radicals to prevent oxidative stress and regulate blood pressure, and is essential in improving blood circulation, which provides more oxygen and nutrients to injured tissues. This also helps improve the recovery time for injuries/soreness!
