Dan J. Slater

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Joseph Slater on May 11, 2026. Dan was born on November 27, 1994, in Norwich, New York, to Sam and Debbie Slater. In 1998, the family moved to Mason, Ohio, where Dan attended Mason schools. He graduated from William Mason High School in 2013 and later attended the University of Cincinnati.

Growing up, Dan was involved in many activities, including Boy Scouts, baseball, soccer, marching band, and high school football. He was also an avid gamer, with Call of Duty and Need for Speed among his favorites.

Dan had a deep love for the outdoors, camping, music, the ocean, and dogs — especially his beloved Staffordshire Terrier, Cooper, who predeceased him. He also had a passion for cars, particularly fast ones, and especially Mustangs, owning several over the years. Dan earned his commercial driver’s license and worked as a big rig truck driver.

Dan is survived by his parents, Sam and Debbie Slater; his sister, Megan (John Dickhaus); his nephews, Cayse and Colby Dickhaus; and many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

A private ceremony will be held at Mueller Funeral Home in Mason, Ohio, on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Mason Youth Organization, the Humane Association of Warren County, or to a local youth sports organization or animal shelter in Dan’s memory.

The family asks for privacy during this difficult time.

Joseph Ernest Pennock, Jr.

Joseph Ernest Pennock, Jr., known affectionately as Joe, passed away unexpectedly on April 15, 2026, in Mason, Ohio. Born on November 27, 1954, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Joe lived a life marked by dedication, warmth, and quiet strength.

Joe’s journey was notably shaped during his service in the United States Air Force, where he met his future wife, Constance “Conni” Vanden Eynden. Their connection was immediate and profound—they met in September, became engaged by December, and were married on June 21, 1975. Their partnership was a harmonious blend of his reserved nature and her outgoing spirit, with Conni’s natural ease in forming friendships complementing Joe’s quiet support and steady presence.

Throughout his life, Joe was remembered for a personality that reflected happiness and deep caring to a fault. He was sympathetic and empathetic, always attuned to the feelings of those around him, yet remained reserved and cautious in his approach to life. His proudest accomplishment was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Conni; his three sons, Brian (Jesse), Jonathan (Rachel), and Kevin; mother, Virginia (nee Weaver) Pennock; as well as his sisters, Barbara Smokowicz and Marianne Peterson. Joe’s familial circle extended further to include his aunt, Mary Mendrey, and many loving family members and friends. Among those who held a special place in his life were Jeff Whisler and Larry Whisler, whom Joe helped raise, exemplifying his nurturing spirit beyond his immediate family.

Joe's father, Joseph E. Pennock, Sr. and his sister Holly Whisler, preceded him in death, leaving behind a legacy that he honored and cherished.

Though reserved, Joe’s impact on those who knew him was profound. His steadfast kindness, unwavering support, and empathetic nature have left an indelible mark on his family and community alike. The memory of Joe’s life is one of genuine care, heartfelt devotion, and quiet dignity.

His family and friends will gather to remember and celebrate a man who, though quietly reserved, played a pivotal role in their lives and hearts. As they mourn his passing, they also honor a life lived with honor, humility, and deep love.

Valerye May Garratt

JOIN HERE FOR LIVESTREAMING OF THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE

Valerye May Garratt, née Page, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, in Mason, Ohio. Born on May 18, 1939, in Southend-on-Sea, England, Valerye lived a life marked by devotion to her family, community, and personal passions.

As a teenager, Valerye and her friends enjoyed evenings at the local dance hall. With a tap on the shoulder and a polite request to finish the dance with him, Raymond Lewis Garratt waltzed into her life. Their romance blossomed into marriage and they spent their free time with friends or traveling around Europe on a motorbike. They made the significant decision to move to the United States and eventually settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they began to grow their family, welcoming two beloved daughters, Karen and Ashlie. The couple celebrated 58 years of marriage together.

Though she made her home far from England, her British roots never left her. She lovingly woke her family each morning with a cup of tea and made sure there was always an afternoon “cuppa” to bring everyone together.

She devoted herself to supporting her daughters’ activities and passions. She was involved in her community as a Campfire Girls leader for Karen and generously gave her time as a dedicated room mom at school. A talented seamstress, she made clothes for the girls and sewed ballet costumes for Ashlie’s performances. Her love was shown not only in what she said, but in the countless thoughtful ways she cared for her family every day.

Valerye was known for her green thumb and was a Master Gardener, cultivating beauty and life in her surroundings with skill and dedication. She would take daily walks around the garden, noting what was blooming or what needed trimming. She found great joy in playing bridge and cribbage, pursuits that reflected her sharp mind and love of camaraderie.

After retiring to Florida in 2001, she became an active member of the Sunnyland Antique Boat Club alongside her husband, Ray, cherishing this new chapter of community and shared interest. Her warm spirit extended into volunteering as Valerye generously dedicated her time to the Ag Center in Tavares, Florida.

Valerye is survived by her daughters, Karen Louise (Tim) Tharrington and Ashlie Jane Ossege, who carry forward her legacy of love and resilience. She is also fondly remembered by her grandsons, Benjamin Harrison Ossege and Andrew Garratt Ossege. Valerye’s family circle includes her sister, Lynette (Vipin) Patel; nieces Tracey, Charoul (Charlie), and Colette (Fred); as well as several great-nephews and a great-niece, all of whom held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Raymond Lewis Garratt, and her parents, Victor and Dorothy Joan Page (née Sumpter).

Visitation to honor Valerye’s life will be held on May 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 noon at Mueller Funeral Home, 6791 Tylersville Rd, Mason, Ohio 45040. These gatherings will provide an opportunity for family and friends to reflect on Valerye’s remarkable life and her enduring impact.

If desired, memorial donations may be directed to Affinity Care Hospice or to the Salvation Army.

Valerye May Garratt’s life was one of grace, dedication, and kindness, a true testament to the strength of character and love that defined her journey. Her presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Mark Albert

Mark R. Albert passed away on April 23, 2026. Born December 27, 1955, in Youngstown, Ohio, he grew up alongside his fraternal twin brother, Matthew. Mark shared 48 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Cindy (née Schlabaugh), his high school sweetheart. Together, they built a life centered on love, loyalty, and an unbreakable partnership that was felt by all who knew them.

Mark was a devoted father to three sons: Brian (Anne) of Mason, Ohio; Scott (Bethany) of Boone, North Carolina; and Kevin (Callie) of Earlysville, Virginia. He was an incredibly proud and loving grandfather to Matthew, Nellie, Nora, Cy, Wade, Cole, and Grady. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and nothing brought him more joy than being “Papa.” He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn of Cleveland, Ohio; sisters-in-law Karen Kotarski (Paul), Deb Bennett (Gary), and Colleen Rose (Alan); along with many nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his brother Matthew and his parents, James and Wilma (née Schultz).

Mark grew up in Austintown, Ohio, and graduated from Austintown Fitch High School in 1974. He went on to earn a degree in electrical engineering from Youngstown State University in 1987, completing his studies while working full-time and attending classes in the evenings. His strong work ethic and determination defined a successful career as a project manager in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, where he led large-scale expansions and earned deep respect from colleagues and friends alike.

More than anything, Mark will be remembered for how he made people feel. He brought humor, warmth, and a playful spirit into every room, and he had a way of making others feel comfortable, valued, and cared for. He had a generous heart and was always willing to go above and beyond to lend a helping hand—whether it meant tackling a project, offering guidance, or simply being there when it mattered most. He found true joy in working with his hands, especially on home and car projects, often side by side with his sons. He also loved being on the water and cherished the many memories made boating with his family.

Following years of hard work, Mark and Cindy relocated to North Carolina, where he accepted a promotion and continued his career. During this time, they embraced a new chapter filled with travel, time with family, and many cherished trips to Emerald Isle, a place they especially loved.
