She was intelligent, an avid reader, an outstanding college student. She was attractive, and her style was classic. She was always well put together, even when engaged in gardening, her favorite past time. She was a planner and organizer. She managed the family finances and property management company, with great care and accuracy. She was always prudent with investments and savings.
She was a wonderful wife, mother and caregiver. Her husband was chronically ill, and partly because of her diligent caregiving, he lived 20 years longer than the Doctors anticipated. She had child, a girl. Because of her love and her gifts for household management, this child never wanted for anything, material or otherwise. The child grew up understanding that she was the most important thing in her mother’s life. She made sure the girl was taught Godly values and attended church. Eventually, her daughter grew up, married and had children of her own. By this time her husband had passed away, and the grandchildren became the most important things in her life. Even though her daughter’s family lived across the country, she managed to visit at least three times per year, and stayed for extended periods. She gifted them with many wonderful family vacations. Some of the best memories her now grown grandchildren have, were those treasured visits with “Grammie”.
Of course, time marches on, and nothing remains the same. While she is still with us, she is no longer well put together, can no longer plan or organize. Independently, gardening, reading and travel are out of the question. She requires assistance with simple finances, and other daily living activities. She doesn’t always recall the names of her grandchildren, or remember the last time she spoke with them. She doesn’t remember much, if at all, about those treasured vacations and visits. She remembers only bits and pieces of her daughter’s childhood.
