Most people think pleasure and pain are opposites.
They're not. They're both processed in the exact same part of the brain.
When something pleasurable (a drink, substance, etc.) triggers a dopamine release… your brain immediately works to counteract it. It tips the balance back the other way, creating discomfort to restore equilibrium.
The higher the high, the harder the brain needs to push back to find that stability it craves. And over time, you need more just to feel normal (and less and less to feel pain).
This is why chasing relief can so quickly become its own kind of suffering.
But it’s just your brain doing exactly what it's designed to do.
Dr. Anna Lembke (psychiatrist at Stanford University and author of Dopamine Nation) has spent her career explaining that understanding how your brain works is one of the most powerful tools in recovery.
When you have that knowledge, finding the right tools and support becomes a lot less daunting. If you're ready to take that first step, we're here.
