March is Brain Injury Awareness Month 🧠

As a speech-language pathologist, I have the privilege of working with individuals rebuilding their voices, thoughts, and connections after brain injury. A brain injury can affect so much more than memory…it can impact communication, understanding, attention, and the ability to express who you are.

Speech therapy helps people regain the skills needed to communicate, think clearly, and reconnect with the world around them. Progress may look small day to day, but every word spoken, every thought organized, and every conversation regained is a powerful step forward.

This month is about raising awareness, supporting survivors and their families, and recognizing the strength it takes to recover.

If you or someone you love is living with a brain injury, know that recovery is a journey. You don’t have to walk it alone.

💙 Let’s continue to spread awareness, compassion, and hope.

Seeing my patients thrive is one of the greatest joys of what I do. 💙

Meet “JM.”

JM was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at just 2 years old. After limited progress with traditional approaches, at the age of 6 years we began combining Speech Therapy with Transcranial Photobiomodulation at Embrace Your Speech.

The progress has been incredible to witness.
✨ Within 6 months of therapy:
JM went from using signs to request items to following commands and identifying objects.

✨ By 12 months of therapy:
He began producing vocalizations and word approximations.

✨ After 18 months of therapy:
JM started to produce words, reading words and phrases.

✨ After 24 months of therapy:
JM started to produce phrases and sentences

Over time, his expressive language grew from single words → phrases → sentences → answering questions and commenting on topics.

Today, JM continues to make amazing progress every day, and watching his confidence and communication grow has been truly inspiring.

Stories like JM’s are why I love sharing the journeys of my patients and celebrating every milestone along the way.

This little guy is thriving. 💫

💙🌍 Rare Disease Day 🌍💜

Today, we stand with the millions of individuals and families affected by rare diseases. While each condition may be uncommon, together they impact so many lives worldwide, and 1 in 10 Americans live with a rare disease.

As a speech-language pathologist, I have the privilege of working with incredible children and adults with rare genetic, neurological, and developmental conditions that affect their communication, feeding, and swallowing.

On this Rare Disease Day, I celebrate my patients and their families. Thank you for trusting me to be part of your journey! 💜

Let’s continue to raise awareness, advocate for access to therapy and early intervention, and amplify voices that deserve to be heard.

Feeding is more than just eating- it’s a complex developmental skill. It requires strength, coordination, sensory processing, and safe swallowing.
For some children, especially those with developmental delays, neurological differences, or medical complexities, feeding can be incredibly challenging.

This may look like:
• Difficulty chewing • Gagging or coughing during meals • Refusing certain foods • Limited textures • Prolonged dependence on purees • G-tube feeding or NPO status

Feeding challenges are not simply “picky eating.” They often reflect underlying motor, sensory, or medical factors.
With the right support and guidance, children can develop safer, more confident feeding skills — one step at a time.

Today is World Orafacial Myofunctional Sciences Day!

It is observed to promote awareness of the assessment and treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders. Established to highlight the impact of myofunctional therapy on breathing, swallowing, and oral posture, this day focuses on evidence-based practices.

Speech therapy is used to treat disorders related to the muscles of the face and mouth- not just speech alone.

Playing with purpose!

To an outside observer, it might look like we’re just playing with toys…but playing is highly intentional and goal-driven.

When we play, we’re building language in the most natural and meaningful way. Through shared play, children practice turn-taking, requesting, commenting, expanding sentences, and using new vocabulary — all in a context that feels safe and motivating.

Play allows us to follow the child’s interests while intentionally targeting their individual speech and language goals. It’s not “just play” — it’s purposeful, relationship-based intervention that supports real-world communication.
