Purim, 2024
It’s Purim, hip hip hooray!
A time to celebrate an important holiday.
A time when Jews nearly faced extinction
A holiday of the finest distinction!
A time when Haman our huge enemy
Wanted King Achasveros to make a decree
That Jews in Shushan would have to die
Please don’t kill me, each Jew cried.
Shushan was their home and they liked it just fine
The skies always blue and the sun did shine.
But beautiful Queen Esther, wife to the King
Heard about Haman’s plot and to the king she did sing
My people must be saved and I beg you, dear King
From my Uncle Mordechai, I heard about the whole horrible thing.
Save the people, for I , too, am a Jew
I don’t want to leave the palace- I don’t want to leave you!
So the King cancelled his decree to slaughter the Jews
And summoned Haman - to give him the blues.
Haman was banished from the kingdom, big surprise!
He vanished before everyone’s eyes!
And through history whenever Haman’s name is said
We drown out his name that caused us such dread.
We make noise with groggers to prevent hearing his name
The louder the better to give him no fame.
We stamp our feet and boo- when his name is recited
We don’t miss him a bit, he’s gone, we’re delighted!
We dress up in costumes to have joyous fun
3 sided hamentaschen eaten by everyone.
It’s Purim, we’re still here singing and dancing
We’re so happy to celebrate- we’re joyfully prancing!
