🌿 Teacher Spotlight 🌿
🧘♀️ Meet Trisha Bird! 🧘♀️
1. How did you first discover yoga, and what inspired you to become a teacher?
✨ I found yoga during a transitional time in my life. I was newly sober and feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, and detached from myself. At the encouragement of my therapist, I begrudgingly decided to try yoga. I began with restorative and yin classes, which opened the door to studying yoga philosophy and developing a meditation practice. Getting quiet and turning inward to the nuance of sensation reawakened a curiosity about myself and the world around me that had felt dormant for a long time. I didnt come into the more physical practices until my 40’s, and that has brought about a whole other level of interesting self discovery! I initially went to Yoga Teacher Training to deepen my personal practice, and then chose to become a teacher because I needed to share this thing that I love!
2. What do you love most about teaching yoga?
✨ I love the creative expression, the challenge, the chance to share things I’m passionate about and grow along with my students. I love seeing students fully in the moment, being with whatever that moment has to offer. I especially love seeing people light up and become more comfortable in their bodies - they move differently when they’re living life in the first person! Most of all, I love creating a space where this can happen, where shared practice becomes supportive and authentic, and everyone can drop their masks and simply BE themselves. If they’re consistent with it, yoga always has a way of giving people whatever it is they need from it.
3. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to students just starting their practice?
✨ The first thing I’d say to someone starting yoga is that there’s no judgment here..no one is watching you or keeping score, there’s no trophy, no such thing as being “good” at yoga. Your practice is yours to benefit from, and it will evolve as your needs and intentions change. “Yoga” is a big umbrella term, there are several styles of classes to choose from. Experiment and find what nourishes you.
4. How does yoga show up in your life outside the studio?
✨ It has taught me discipline, strengthened my sense of self-worth, and deepened my self-trust. It helps me recognize my own patterns and see how I show up in the world. It shapes my relationships, my work, the way I navigate daily life…and how I forgive myself for stumbling (it’s a practice!). I feel like I could study for several lifetimes and still have more to explore, and that’s an exciting and humbling feeling.
Huge bonus - this practice has introduced me to some of the most engaging and interesting and compassionate people. It continues to broaden my perspective and open doors I didn’t even know existed.
I am so grateful to share and grow in practice with you.
