🌿 Teacher Spotlight 🌿

🧘‍♀️ Meet Trisha Bird! 🧘‍♀️

1. How did you first discover yoga, and what inspired you to become a teacher?

✨ I found yoga during a transitional time in my life. I was newly sober and feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, and detached from myself. At the encouragement of my therapist, I begrudgingly decided to try yoga. I began with restorative and yin classes, which opened the door to studying yoga philosophy and developing a meditation practice. Getting quiet and turning inward to the nuance of sensation reawakened a curiosity about myself and the world around me that had felt dormant for a long time. I didnt come into the more physical practices until my 40’s, and that has brought about a whole other level of interesting self discovery! I initially went to Yoga Teacher Training to deepen my personal practice, and then chose to become a teacher because I needed to share this thing that I love!

2. What do you love most about teaching yoga?

✨ I love the creative expression, the challenge, the chance to share things I’m passionate about and grow along with my students. I love seeing students fully in the moment, being with whatever that moment has to offer. I especially love seeing people light up and become more comfortable in their bodies - they move differently when they’re living life in the first person! Most of all, I love creating a space where this can happen, where shared practice becomes supportive and authentic, and everyone can drop their masks and simply BE themselves. If they’re consistent with it, yoga always has a way of giving people whatever it is they need from it.

3. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to students just starting their practice?

✨ The first thing I’d say to someone starting yoga is that there’s no judgment here..no one is watching you or keeping score, there’s no trophy, no such thing as being “good” at yoga. Your practice is yours to benefit from, and it will evolve as your needs and intentions change. “Yoga” is a big umbrella term, there are several styles of classes to choose from. Experiment and find what nourishes you.

4. How does yoga show up in your life outside the studio?

✨ It has taught me discipline, strengthened my sense of self-worth, and deepened my self-trust. It helps me recognize my own patterns and see how I show up in the world. It shapes my relationships, my work, the way I navigate daily life…and how I forgive myself for stumbling (it’s a practice!). I feel like I could study for several lifetimes and still have more to explore, and that’s an exciting and humbling feeling.

Huge bonus - this practice has introduced me to some of the most engaging and interesting and compassionate people. It continues to broaden my perspective and open doors I didn’t even know existed.

I am so grateful to share and grow in practice with you.

🌿 Teacher Spotlight 🌿

🧘‍♀️ Meet Keri Lynn Baird! 🧘‍♀️

1. How did you first discover yoga, and what inspired you to become a teacher?

✨ I was introduced to yoga by a friend I used to strength train with who invited me to a hot yoga class in Altamont. I fell in love from the very first class. At the time, I was newly sober and on a deep personal journey, and yoga became an outlet that helped me navigate both the hard days and the good ones. When my friend later moved back to Chicago and there was no one nearby teaching hot yoga, I decided to get certified myself. I was also in school to become a massage therapist, and yoga aligned perfectly with that path — offering connection, support, and a community that truly carried me through that season of life.

2. What do you love most about teaching yoga?

✨ I love being able to guide people back to themselves. Yoga has taught me so much about my body, emotions, mental and spiritual state, and how those things cycle. Being able to share that awareness and offer a space where people can feel supported, grounded, and strong is truly a blessing.

3. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to students just starting their practice?

✨ Meet yourself where you are. Your mat is your space — not a place to compare or perform. I always encourage students to listen to their bodies, speak up about how they feel, and remember that every practice looks different. The goal is never to look like the teacher, but to honor your own experience.

4. How does yoga show up in your life outside the studio?

✨ Yoga shows up in my life through how I handle stress, parenting, and everyday challenges. It’s taught me how to pause, breathe, and use tools like meditation to understand how I’m feeling and respond with more intention. It helps me reconnect to my inner light and move through life more grounded and present.

We’re so grateful for Keri’s guidance and the warmth she brings to every class at MYC. Step onto the mat with her, breathe, move, and reconnect. Check the schedule to join her in practice!

🌿 Student Spotlight 🌿

Danielle Lanman-Rhodes has taken 86 classes at MYC!!! She meets her practice with enthusiasm, openness, and heart, embracing challenge in a way that feels so steady and sincere. We’re grateful to share a glimpse of her yoga journey.

1) Is there one thing you wish you’d known when you first started yoga?

✨ I wish I would have known the acceptance in this community to meet “yourself where you’re at” was truly an acceptable mindset and embraced.

2) Do you have a tip for someone trying to make yoga a habit?

✨ Be open minded…. trust this community….I know this can be hard for some… to trust….but, embrace yourself because this community… this community right here…. it will definitely embrace you!

3) Which pose is your favorite (or least favorite)?

✨ I enjoy a challenge and learning… any pose pushes me to be a better version of myself and accepting where I’m at. However, Malasana is my favorite. I feel grounded not only physically, but mentally. 🙏🙏🙏

4) What’s one unexpected way yoga has helped you outside the studio?

✨ Being more present, embracing life, challenging myself more…. truly loving life because it is too short not to.

Danielle reminds us that yoga is as much about trust and presence as it is about postures. Her ability to challenge herself while staying grounded is felt in the room. We’re so grateful she’s part of this community and excited to continue practicing alongside her!

🌿 Student Spotlight 🌿

Kathleen Jones has joined us on the mat 50 times and brings a calm strength to the studio. She’s active and accomplished as an athlete in the Jiu Jitsu world, reminding us that we can be more than one thing - that strength and softness can coexist beautifully (and, yes,…we’re very glad she’s on our side 😉).

1. Is there one thing you wish you’d known when you first started yoga?

✨ It’s not just for rehab and physical therapy, and it’s ok that your balance and flexibility is different everyday.

2. Do you have a tip for someone trying to make yoga a habit?

✨ It doesn’t always have to be going to a class. I work long hours so sometimes it’s just taking 20 minutes before I start my day or before bed to stretch and be in my body.

3. Which pose is your favorite (or least favorite)?

✨ I really like birds of paradise or firefly because I totally have the “wow look what I just did” moment. Least favorite - locust pose

4. What’s one unexpected way yoga has helped you outside the studio?

✨ It has taught me to love my body where it’s at, to listen to what my body is telling me, and to really be ok with sitting in an uncomfortable moment.

Kathleen’s journey on the mat highlights the quiet power of moving with intention, listening deeply, and staying present through whatever arises. We’re so happy to have her at the Collective!

🌿 Student Spotlight 🌿 (Birthday Edition! 🎉)

Teresa Metzger is a true cornerstone of our community. A familiar and steady presence in our 5:30 a.m. classes, she shows up week after week with focus, heart, and clear intention. Her commitment to her practice, paired with her warmth and joyful energy, makes the studio feel more alive, especially in those early morning hours!

Today, we’re especially grateful to celebrate her on her birthday and share a bit of her experience on the mat.

1. What’s something you’ve learned about yourself through your yoga practice?

✨ Something I’ve learned about myself through my practice is that I am my own person doing my own thing. It makes no difference what others are doing or not doing, we are all doing our best on any given day.

2. Is there a pose, practice, or moment in class that makes you feel most grounded or empowered?

✨ I feel most grounded in mountain pose - engaging my feet and all 10 toes, hands and heart open and accepting all the good that is available to me.

3. What originally brought you to yoga, and what keeps you coming back?

✨ What/who brought me to yoga was the yoga teacher Missy Craig. She is no longer in Mattoon, but she is still in my head at times. She would tell - you’re only as old as your spine feels! What keeps me coming back are my new-found instructors and the classes they offer. I particularly love to start my Monday morning with the slow flow/stretching class with Keri.

4. What’s one tip you’d give to someone who feels nervous about starting yoga?

✨ START! As I said in #1, no one cares what you are doing or not doing on your mat. Be open to the experience and all that yoga has to offer.

Theresa has taken 58 classes with us and continues to show up with consistency, care, and a genuine love for the practice. She’s passionate about sharing yoga, often inviting others to try it, and has a natural way of making everyone feel welcome. With big laughs, vibrant energy, and a generous heart, our community is brighter because of her. We’re so grateful to share space with you, and wish you the happiest of birthdays, Teresa! 🧘‍♀️ 🎉
