It is remarkable that a full year has passed since the enactment of the Lymphedema Treatment Act, a monumental victory for individuals afflicted with Lymphedema. The past year has been a learning experience for all involved, with a focus on navigating the intricacies of coverage, documentation requirements, and Medicare Home Health bundling. In response to the numerous inquiries and requests for further education, we are pleased to announce that Innovative Wound Solutions will be offering interactive educational sessions on Lymphedema pumps and garments. Wound Care centers now have access to authentic Lymphedema garments, while Home Health benefits from superior compression options not bundled under Medicare. Lymphedema Therapists have been leading the way as pioneers in leveraging the Lymphedema Treatment Act to provide affordable garments to patients. This development presents a new opportunity for multidisciplinary teams to collaborate and make a meaningful difference in patient care. Commencing in January, we will host two educational events featuring guest speakers from Lymphedema pump manufacturers and garment manufacturers who will share information on available products. The passage of the Lymphedema Treatment Act (LTA) has been a God Send for so many people. The process is beginning to flow as everyone gets through that initial learning curve.

Reduction garments are covered during the reduction/decongeative phase. The maintenance garments are covered then covered when edema has plateaued as well as night time garments. Night time garments are an important piece of the treatment process for many as it helps maintain the reduction of edema during nighttime hours when compression is off and provide massage to the fibrotic areas. They are also great to use inside a pump sleeve when pumping to provide a massage effect and work on fibrotic areas.

Wound clinics also greatly benefit as many patients with Venous disease inevitably progress to secondary Lymphedema. I89.0 or Lymphedema then qualifies patients for garments REGARDLESS of whether there is an open wound or not.

Garments for Lymphedema are also not bundled under Home Health. Venous garment are bundled when DX is only venous because they have a “surgical dressing “ code of A6545. Lymphedema garments are not considered a “surgical dressing code” or disposable and do not fall under bundled home health services.

These are exciting times to help these patients who have, for so long, struggled to get the supplies they need!
