Black History Month: The Blinding of Isaac Woodard (Documentary)
Friday, February 27, 2026, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Large Community Room, Graves County Public Library,
This Black History Month program offers a powerful opportunity to learn, reflect, and be in community. The documentary tells the story of Isaac Woodard, a Black Army sergeant returning home after World War II who was pulled from a bus and brutally beaten by a local police chief, leaving him permanently blind. When the officer was acquitted by an all-white jury, the injustice drew national attention—and helped shift the course of American civil rights history.
Based on Unexampled Courage by Richard Gergel, the film explores how Woodard’s case contributed to President Harry Truman’s racial awakening and his later decision to desegregate the federal government and the military. It also traces how this moment helped set the stage for Brown v. Board of Education and the modern civil rights movement. Drinks and charcuterie boards will be served during the screening. A limited number of copies of Unexampled Courage will be available to attendees.

Yes, it's Move-It Monday, and that means it's a good time to think about a gentle stretch. Give your body some attention by gently moving your arms along to some music, then stretching your arms above your head and to the side. Never take stretches to the point of discomfort. Breathe through the stretches, too.
