”The wisdom and compassion a woman can intuitively experience in childbirth can make her a source of healing and understanding for other women.” ~Stephen Gaskin
Welcome! For my first post, I'd love to introduce myself:
New to the Long Beach community, I am wife to Nate Wood, mother to a sweet, spunky almost-two-year old, director of a local after-school program, and a trained birth and postpartum doula! (shoutout to Doula Trainings International)
Although I wear many different hats, I am beyond grateful, inspired, and empowered by each one.
My journey to becoming a doula began while I was pregnant with my daughter. Reading through the childbirth and breastfeeding books, I was captivated, to say the least, by the power of individuals to give birth and to mother, in a natural, physiological way. Yet, at the same time, I was continuously shocked. How could such a normal, biological process happen so differently than what our current medical system "allows" for?
The birth of our daughter was a most riveting, humbling, and intuitive experience. The power of that day was both restorative and transformative, and gave me the profound ability to sustain my new role as mother. What was most impactful during that time was the incredible support I had from my birth team, which included my doula. To feel loved, safe, and continuously supported is what all birthing people deserve and need.
As a doula, my desire is to come alongside other birthing individuals and families to provide that same steadfast support. The way we birth and nurture new life has a lasting and profound impact on our greater society (more about this in a future post!) I am honored to play my part.
