I just finished teaching a great 2 hour backbend workshop!

I had so much fun teaching it and my students explored two themes:

👉the concept that we can go beyond our mind's reaction to something that's "hard" and find a state of INNER ease, even when something is challenging.

👉to reverse the "forward slump" we all have a tendency toward depends on releasing and lengthening the spine starting at your tailbone AND effective backbends for both the lower spine and upper spine.

My students discovered that this combination, plus using their arms and abs, gave them more flexibility and movement in their spine and they felt longer and taller!

August 14th is Global Yoga Therapy Day! The goal of this day is to build awareness of Yoga Therapy as a profession and its role in health and healing. Did you know that Yoga Therapy is a distinct, separate profession from Yoga Teacher? (although many Yoga Therapists are also Yoga Teachers) and Yoga Therapists can work in many different kinds of settings.

Yoga Therapy can be an important adjunct to regular medical care, and addresses individual needs. Here at Joy and Grace Yoga, I offer Svaroopa(R) Yoga Therapy to adults looking for embodied healing and less reliance on traditional medicine for their pain and medical concerns.*

The Veterans Yoga Project is an amazing organization dedicated to improving the health, well-being and resiliency of veterans, military families, and their communities through mindful movement, breathing, meditation, guided rest, and gratitude. Their services are free and there is even an app where folks can access all manner of health and wellness classes and practices..

I have had the honor and privilege this weekend of taking their training "Mindful Resiliency for Trauma Recovery" and have learned so much.

I am looking forward to working with VYP in serving those who have served. Grateful for this opportunity, my instructors in this program and fellow yoga teachers in the program..

It's not about doing the pose. It's about the inner shifts that are happening that helped her get there. That's where the growth and healing is.

Why are my students so happy?? They just took a fun workshop where they learned about and moved all the joints in their body. They now have less stiffness and more energy!

And their new friend helped them understand where all their joints are- there were more than they thought!
I had so much fun teaching this class and loved watching them all transform from tired and work week worn to smiling and energetic!

When you take even a few moments to slow down and bring your attention to your body and breath:

👉your nervous system starts to settle down, activating your "rest and relaxation" capacity

👉you connect your mind and body, becoming more grounded and centered

👉you feel calmer and more relaxed

We all need this slowing down more than ever.

I can’t believe I’m sharing this picture!

Yes, this is in fact, a closet in my house last weekend...before I did the work to clean it out, and after. But……what does that have to do with yoga??🤔🤔

It's a space I don’t see all the time, and once I shut the door everything looks the same on the outside, but yet, there has been a shift. Old, useless and outdated stuff is gone. That space is now cleaner, more open, and lighter, affecting the energy of my house. Can you feel the difference when you see this picture? It was hard work, but the result felt so good!

🤩This is where yoga comes in. The tight places in your body and the clutter in your mind are like those out of control closets- too much stuff in there, most of it not serving you, and oh so easy to shut a (mental) door against.

But when you take the steps, and do the work, yoga helps to clear the inner clutter and the old junk- from your mind, your body, and spirit. YOU become more open and lighter- on the inside!! It’s a great feeling. 😍

One of the things that makes Svaroopa(R) Yoga unique is the extensive use of props ( mostly thick blankets) to give your body the support it needs. When you are supported, you can soften and release through the tight places, rather than tightening more or efforting in order to hold the pose.
