I’m giving a talk next Wednesday, 1130am, 5th February at the Bracken County Health Department. This is for the over 50s age group

BUILT TO MOVE - Strength Is Life.

After age 50, the average person can lose 3% or more of their strength. High muscle mass decreases the risk of all cause mortality by 30%. More muscle is better for the metabolism and decreases the risk of muscle wasting and frailty. Weak individuals are much more likely to fall and sustain injuries. An individual over 60 who falls and breaks a hip has a 25% increased risk of death within a year

Why do we lose muscle as we age? What can we do to prevent it?

Simple tips on how to improve strength, fitness, balance and flexibility

Jennifer Buttery signed up to run for Campellsville today. She’s come a long way since a major hip surgery a year ago. The program sounds amazing. Great Coach with his sights set on national success. Jennifer is a key part of his plan!

Patient Of The Month - Jennifer Buttery.

Giants Among Us

Jennifer Buttery is BACK! So much fun watching you run in competition again! Back in 2023 a hip problem took this athlete from winning races to possibly never being able to do more than walk…ever again. She underwent a significant surgery which required months of recovery and rehabilitation, with no guarantee that things would turn out well. I remember Jennifer when she first came to Physical Therapy. Non weight-bearing on crutches and her life had been turned upside down. That’s a lot for any teenage runner to cope with and her whole identity had been taken away in a flash. However her indomitable, tough as nails spirit was evident even then. She was smiling and ready to do what needed to be done. Jennifer's therapist, Don Becker, progressed her carefully to avoid damaging the vulnerable joint.

I remember reading something that Jennifer wrote about what running meant to her… EVERYTHING… and it brought a tear to my eye. During her recovery, she still went to practice, encouraged her team mates and everyone of them gave it right back and then some. As time went on it became apparent there was a chance that Jennifer was going to recover well and possibly run again…. Going from sickening hip pain pre op to ZERO not long into her recovery. She could sense there was a possibility of getting back to competitive running and her surgeon was cautiously optimistic. Eventually she was allowed to start running limited distances slowly. Her XC coach, Mark Kachler, was fully aware of her situation and did an EXCELLENT job of successfully taking Jennifer from rehab back to competition over several more months. He was ELATED to see Jennifer finishing that race, as were we all. (I wasn't sure she was going to survive that hug 😀)

Jennifer stands out from the crowd a million miles. Super smart, charming, disciplined and works hard at everything she does. Character isn’t measured in races won, it’s facing adversity with a smile, hiding the fear and getting back up when you have been knocked down. She has that in spades and is truly inspirational. I take small pieces of people I admire and keep them. JB is on that list. Finally… Behind every Jennifer is an incredible mother. Tara Banta has done an EXCEPTIONAL job and I’m sure Jennifer’s sister is equally well grounded and impressive. The bond between her and the girls is tight

Exercise Innovation. The first patient is 89 years old and suffered a severe fracture of the femur, which involved his knee joint. He was barely able to stand and at high risk of falls when he started physical therapy. In this video he is working on leg, core and arm strength without risking a fall. On discharge the patient was able to walk safely with a walker and returned home to independent living.
The second patient had difficulty walking and was at risk of falls after suffering from a stroke. He was highly motivated to make a good recovery and toward the end of his rehabilitation was able to perform advanced lateral shuffle and jumping exercises. When he finished rehabilitation his gait and balance were excellent. He was also able to make a return to living at home alone
Here at Meadowview rehabilitation department we love helping patients like OD and Paul regain their strength and independence following injury or illness

Meet our adult Patient of the Month, Keileigh Truesdell. Keileigh was in a serious motor vehicle accident on 11/22/20 and suffered multiple right arm and leg fractures. When she started therapy Keileigh had difficulty bathing, dressing and transferring to different surfaces. Her wrist and hand were very stiff, affecting her ability to use it very much at all. Keileigh has been working hard since the end of November and made amazing progress! She is now able to completely dress herself (including buttons!), brush her own hair, bathe , drive and make transfers easily. She can also touch her thumb to her pinky now (trust me it’s a big deal 😉). She is a senior this year and has been able to manage school and multiple rehab sessions weekly, while maintaining a positive attitude. We are very proud of the progress Keileigh has made and all the work she has put in to her rehab! Thankyou for all of your hard work Keileigh and letting us share your story!

What is Physical Therapy? Whatever it takes to help you meet your goals. Patrick Hubbard suffered a stroke last year which left him very weak on the left side. When he started PT at MRMC he was dragging the left leg and very unsteady. Patrick wants to get back to driving a tractor trailer and needs to be able to be able to climb and balance on narrow running boards while securing equipment. Rehabilitation has been focused on strength and balance training. He has worked hard, made incredible progress and is on track for a successful return to work. Patrick is now a friend of mine and we have hiked together several times
