True. I taught general and developmental psychology as an adjunct for 11 years and had to supplement handouts and videos of famous experiments done by reputable sources because required introductory psychology textbooks selected by others were so bad.

College psychology textbooks still struggle to accurately present controversial topics and historical events, according to new research. While some improvements have occurred, textbooks frequently repeat scientific urban legends.

The general public has been led to believe that a diagnosis of a mental disorder is the same as a medical diagnosis of disease, which is false. This is common knowledge among psychiatrists, but not something they often admit to, simply because it is the foundation upon which psychiatry is built.

In 1956, two of the most eminent psychologists of the 20th century went head to head in one of the most compelling debates in the history of psychology. These were not simply two different theories. They were two fundamentally different visions of what it means to be human.

This debate not only offers a fascinating insight into the thinking of two of the most influential psychologists of the 20th Century, but also a wonderful historical snapshot of the ideological battles going on within psychology at the time.

All three papers from this landmark 1956 debate are now available to read in full for free.

Today in the History of Psychology (23rd March 1933), Philip Zimbardo was born. His controversial Stanford Prison Experiment in 1971 showed how situations and systems can make good people do bad things by creating the conditions in which those in positions of power dehumanize those in less powerful positions.

A passionate standard bearer for the discipline of psychology, Philip Zimbardo's ground-breaking public television series, Discovering Psychology has been seen by millions of people worldwide and received the Carl Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science.

Philip Zimbardo served as president of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2002 and received the APA Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in the Science of Psychology in 2012. He died on October 14, 2024, age 91 years.
