Brian Frohmader, a 6-year survivor of tonsil cancer, believes the expertise and unwavering commitment of his SSM Health team saved his life.

“I really worship the ground these doctors and nurses walk on,” he said. “They’re truly why I’m still here.”

Brian’s journey began with something seemingly small, but persistent: back pain. A routine scan revealed more.

“By chance, my neck and throat were visible in in the scan, and that’s how they caught my cancer,” he said.

Tonsil cancer and other mouth and throat cancers are becoming more commonly diagnosed, with rates increasing about 1% each year for the past decade.

Common symptoms of these cancers include difficulty swallowing, feeling like something is caught in the throat, persistent earaches, swelling in the neck, and jaw stiffness.

Now that Brian is cancer-free and has a second chance at living a healthier lifestyle, he’s doing all he can to give back to others.

“Life is a gift, and now if people need help, I can’t say no,” he said. “I’m grateful for everything.”

SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital is advancing neonatal care with the introduction of the Neo-View video laryngoscope, a cutting-edge device designed to improve the safety and success of intubating newborns - especially those born prematurely.

The technology has been made possible thanks to a $7,200 gift from the Agnesian HealthCare Foundation. “We know that our patients appreciate the convenience of being able to deliver their baby within their own community so it’s important to us to have the latest technology to ensure the overall health and safety of our birthing moms and their newborns,” according to Mason Gravelle, Philanthropy Development Manager, Wisconsin Region, Agnesian HealthCare Foundation.

Unlike traditional laryngoscopes, which require providers to be eye-level with the baby’s mouth to visually locate the vocal cords, the Neo-View features a fiber optic camera built into the laryngoscope. This camera transmits a high-definition image to a separate screen, giving clinicians a clearer, larger view of the baby’s airway anatomy.

“This technology will be a game-changer for our team and the infants we care for,” according to Loraine Carley, RN, SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital Manager of Women’s Health - Inpatient OB/GYN. “This makes placing an endotracheal tube easier, faster, and more successful. It’s especially helpful for teaching, because everyone in the room can see what’s happening on the screen.”

The Neo-View is part of SSM Health’s ongoing commitment to investing in technologies that enhance patient outcomes and support clinical excellence.

Join SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital, 620 W. Brown Street, from 5 - 6 pm on Wednesday, September 17 for a special art gallery from REACH Waupun. Meet the artists and enjoy the healing benefits of art. The event is free and open to the public.

The new art gallery, thanks to Agnesian HealthCare Foundation funding, features rotating pieces of art from area schools and non-profit organizations. Pieces will be swapped out every month.

“Studies have shown that exposure to art can reduce the need for pain medication, promote shorter hospital stays, and reduce patient and caregiver stress,” according to DeAnn Thurmer, SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital president. “In addition to offering patients and visitors a unique visual experience, this showcase brings local artists and community together. Our staff look forward to the different exhibits.”

The rotating art exhibits provide patients and visitors with an enriched visual experience proven to advance healing through opportunities for reflection and artistic interpretation.

“Our mission to provide exceptional care involves nurturing our community to develop healthy bodies, minds, and spirits so we are delighted to be able to showcase the talents of these area artists in a place where so many individuals can be engaged and inspired by their creativity,” says Nicole Gill, SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital vice president/clinic administrator.

Volunteer Services is coordinating the art gallery and is looking forward to many exhibits coming. To learn more or questions, call Tara Rhodes, SSM Health volunteer coordinator, at 920-926-4955.

The SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic, 420 E. Division Street, Fond du Lac, is welcoming Elizabeth Dodd, DO, a board-certified pediatrician. She is now accepting patients.

As a pediatrician, Dr. Dodd provides preventive health services for healthy children, as well as medical care for children who are acutely or chronically ill.

A graduate of the Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences, Dr. Dodd completed her pediatric internship and residency at the Kosair Children’s Hospital and University of Louisville School of Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Dodd has always loved working with children from a young age.

“I enjoyed babysitting from age 12, and playing and teach kids,” Dr. Dodd says. “As a pediatrician, I enjoy educating families on how to stay healthy. I’m proficient in ADHD, anxiety, and depression. I have a background caring for athletes and a passion for ensuring healthy and safe competition. I like to prevent patients from having to go to the ER or urgent care.”

In her role, Dr. Dodd encourages parents to “ask questions and remember we are a team working on the same goal of a healthy child. I like being a cheerleader for parents as they raise their children and then once kids are old enough, being their advocate/teaching them how to stay healthy.”

Dr. Dodd enjoys spending time with her husband and children; being outdoors, camping, and hiking; attending sporting events; and taking her children to sports activities.

For more information or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Dodd, call 920-926-8424.

SSM Health is giving $7,500 to Sigma of Fond du Lac, a non-profit women’s organization, to support its annual homeless students program.

Around the 2024 holidays, Sigma adopted 54 homeless students (an increase from 30 the year prior) at Fond du Lac High School, North Fond du Lac High School, and Campbellsport High School. Students receive care packages that include a water bottle, deodorant, hand lotion, chap stick, feminine hygiene products, and gift cards for food, gas, clothing and more.

This year, homeless students at Fond du Lac High School will receive a birthday card with a $10 food gift card.

In addition, last year, Sigma (with support from a previous SSM Health community benefit grant) provided elementary school students in Fond du Lac, North Fond du Lac and Campbellsport, with reusable water bottles, Kleenex, deodorant, and other supplies.

“We are dedicated to supporting a multitude of individuals, organizations, and community needs within Fond du Lac County with our time, talents, and fund-raising efforts,” according to Gretchen Jones, a Sigma member.

“It is our goal to never have to turn down requests as we have become a great resource for the vulnerable population,” Kathy Gravelle, a Sigma member adds. “This specific program aligns with our mission to address nutrition and physical activity, social determinants of health and mental health.”

Sigma’s efforts correlate with similar goals within SSM Health.

“Like Sigma, we’re committed to improving the lives and health of those living within the communities we serve, with special focus on the most pressing health needs identified in the area,” according to Shane Smith, SSM Health Fond du Lac Market president. “It’s important that we support opportunities to increase access to physical activity, chronic disease management, and increase access to food and other essential life needs.”

In 2024, SSM Health's local community benefit ministry totaled more than $568,000 across the communities it serves. This investment helps ensure access to health care for patients who are uninsured or underinsured, train the next generation of health professionals to care for those in need, and fund programs to address the most pressing health needs of our communities.
