🌟 August is National Breastfeeding Month, a time to celebrate the many professionals and peers who support parents on their infant-feeding journey. 💖 At the top of the clinical support hierarchy is the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)—the GOLD standard in lactation care.
Did you know there are 20,570 IBCLCs in the U.S. and 38,154 worldwide? Each one has completed:
• 14 health-science prerequisites
• 95 hours of lactation-specific education (including 5 hours on communication and 2 hours on the WHO Code)
• Up to 1,000 supervised clinical hours
• A rigorous 175-question/photo exam
To recertify, IBCLCs must document 250 clinical hours, 75 continuing education credits, or pass a 4-hour proctored exam .
IBCLCs aren’t just experts—they’re investigators, counselors, advocates, researchers, and cheerleaders. We dig deep to solve latch issues, supply concerns, tongue-tie challenges, and more, ensuring every parent and baby have the support they deserve.
🙌 Tag an IBCLC (or drop your state/country if you’re one of the 20,570 in the U.S. or 38,154 worldwide)! Let’s recognize the dedication, expertise, and compassion that make breastfeeding support possible.
Thank you for all you do to empower families and nurture the next generation! 🌱🤱
