From CRISIS to COMFORT: A Community United to Restore Dignity. Long post but is worth reading.
A few months ago, we received a referral for a patient who was in truly heartbreaking circumstances, bedbound, without Medicaid, without medical supplies, and with no one to assist with daily living needs.
Our dedicated agency supervisor personally conducted the first visit and immediately recognized the urgency. She didn’t simply completed intake, she took action by reaching out to organizations in the community, members in the community, friends, family and current and former attendants seeking donations.
The response was overwhelming. With support from South Texas Health System McAllen, Silver Ribbon, friends, generous individuals from our community, and our wonderful attendants, we received vital donations of wipes, gloves, diapers, blue pads, and more.
These supplies allowed us to provide essential care and restore dignity and comfort, even before Medicaid services kicked in. Our team worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the patient’s Medicaid application was approved and that the patient was able to qualify for Medicaid and provider services.
But we didn’t stop there.
Once he was approved for Medicaid and began receiving standard provider services, we continued working tirelessly to enroll patient in the STAR+PLUS Medicaid Waiver Program, which supports home-based living for adults with disabilities. These waivers offer additional support such as:
• Minor home modifications (ramps, bathroom adaptations, widened doorways)
• Respite care, protective supervision, and personal attendant services
• Therapies (physical, occupational, speech) and adaptive aids/medical supplies.
We are thrilled to share that the patient is now enrolled in the Medicaid Waiver Program, receiving the full range of these services to continue living at home with dignity and love.
This journey, from crisis to comfort, reflects the power of compassion, perseverance, and community. To everyone who joined us, our attendants, South Texas Health System, and caring community members. Thank you for helping us transform a dire situation into a story of hope.
