January 5, 1933
On this day in 1933, crews broke ground on what would become one of America’s most beloved landmarks: the Golden Gate Bridge. 🇺🇸🌉
📆 What Happened Today
- On January 5, 1933, workers began excavating more than 3 million cubic feet of earth to anchor the future Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. 🚧
- The bridge was designed to span the narrow, deep Golden Gate strait, linking San Francisco with Marin County and opening the region to new growth and opportunity.
- Construction was completed in 1937
🧠 A Big American Idea
- As early as 1916, visionaries dreamed of a record-breaking suspension bridge here, even though the technology and cost seemed overwhelming.
- City engineer Michael M. O’Shaughnessy encouraged bold ideas, and engineer Joseph Strauss stepped forward, promising he could build the bridge for far less than early estimates. 💡
⚠️ Why It Matters Today
- The Golden Gate Bridge stands as a symbol of American ingenuity, courage, and determination to tackle challenges that once seemed impossible. 🇺🇸
- To our Plantation Manor family, it’s a reminder that many of you grew up in a United States that dreamed big, worked hard, and built wonders that still inspire us all today. ❤️
