Oct 2 - Oct 7th Transition to Fall
Often people find themselves to be unsettled with the transition into fall. The weather can be unpredictable between hot summer-like days and cool and crisp days like fall. The Air is DRY, AIRY, and COOL; so we practice Grounding poses with a moist wet flow to counteract the dryness along with warming sun salutation to balance the cooling aspects of the seasons.

As of December 28th, 2023 I will no longer be teaching regular classes at the McFarland Senior Center. I will be traveling in my little camper to see National Parks and Woodstock School Classmates from India. I will still record my weekly yoga practice and will happily share it with you if you request it by email or text. Bear in mind I will not always have cell reception or wiFi so my response may be delayed. $10 donation for each Zoom recording--good for a week.

August 28-31st Relief from Hand Pain
In your hand there are three main arches, two transverse and one longitudinal arch. One arch is rigid, but the other two are flexible and are maintained by the use of those tiny muscles in your hand. You can see the shape of your arches by touching thumb to index finger or thumb to little finger.
We will concentrate on our hands but we will also do our Top 10 Yoga Poses adding some hand movements. We will review the Chakra Hand Mudras.

August 21 - 25 Can we do Knees Again?
This is such a common theme, but sure! Why not? In truth, we "Do Knees" every time we practice yoga as most of what we do in class helps our knees. Three salient points: 1. track your knee over the middle of your toes 2. Try to keep your knee stacked over your ankle when in static standing poses. 3. Strong knees benefit from strong supporting structures: hamstrings, quads, ADDuctors and ABDuctors and Bum muscles.

August 14 - 18 Can Yoga Help a Hiatal Hernia? I was asked by one of my students...so I researched it and "Yes, apparently it can". A Hiatal Hernia is a condition in which part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm muscle. We will explore ways in which we can strengthen the diaphragm muscle. Often poor posture can exacerbate a hiatal hernia and we talk about posture and ways to combat the 'head forward syndrome' frequently. Many of the yoga postures are also recommended for strengthening the diaphragm and help relieve the symptoms of a hiatal hernia...Bridge, "Hug the Belly Breathing", Diaphragmatic Breathing with weight on the stomach, East/West breathing. Chair, Pec Stretch (think clamshell twist), Recruitment of the Transversus Abdominis (think pull your 'hip headlights' together), Wall Angel (Upsalute at the wall). It all sounds familiar and what we practice in class every week! Huh! Who knew?!?!

this week we will focus on strengthening the posterior (back) structures of our body, from bottom to top, to help reverse our head forward syndrome and restore our front-to-back strength balance. In our practice, we will strengthen by holding key poses while taking slow intentional breaths and creating core support with abdominal contraction on the exhale.

July 24 -28 Fall Prevention
It's not all about balance. It's not all about Osteoporosis. It is a complex interplay between strength, bone mass, mobility, flexibility, fascia, neuromuscular integration, nervous system modulation and brain health. YogaU says that everyday we should practice mountain pose, plank, squats and locust along with all of their variations. Donna Fahri agrees with daily locust, squats (heels up-arms up to Horse/Chair) and adds on Pointer Dog Flow. These all increase our strength, neuromuscular integration, fascia, flexibility, mobility, and bone mass. Let's practice!
