Mindful Monday Spotlight: Chemicals in Your Home
Did you know that the air inside your home can be 2–5 times more polluted than the air outside? From cleaning supplies and personal care products, to new furniture, cookware, and candles — our everyday environment can quietly expose us to low levels of chemicals known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
Over time, this “toxic load” can add stress to the body’s natural detoxification systems — the liver, kidneys, skin, and lymphatic system. When these pathways are overloaded, you might experience subtle symptoms like fatigue, skin irritation, hormonal imbalance, or increased sensitivities.
Studies reveal that indoor air can contain far more pollutants than we realize. The EPA reports that levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) inside homes are often two to ten times higher than outdoor air. According to the American Lung Association, everyday products such as cleaning sprays, synthetic fragrances, and air fresheners can release these chemicals, which may irritate the eyes, lungs, and skin. Over time, certain compounds like formaldehyde and benzene have been linked to stress on the liver, kidneys, and nervous system. Some are even classified as known or probable carcinogens.
By being mindful of your surroundings, you’re giving your body less to filter and more room to thrive. Every small change from switching your cleaning products, to adding a few plants helps lighten your chemical load and supports your body’s natural ability to heal. For an extra layer of protection, we also offer Austin Air purifiers in our office, which help remove airborne chemicals, VOCs, and other irritants from your home environment
