Several years ago, NASA’s International Space Station ran into a fundamental problem. Their Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) worked simply fine when only humans occupied the station. Still, when they tried to set up an autonomous system by growing plants aboard the station, the chemistry became a little more complex. It now became necessary to remove excess ethylene from the air, something their air purifiers/scrubbers could not do. They were about to abandon the entire “self-sustaining’ experiment when researchers at the Wisconsin Center for Space Automation and Robotics came to their rescue.
These scientists created a Photo-Catalytic Oxidization (PCO) air purifier/scrubber. The PCO device excites an ultra-thin layer of titanium dioxide with ultraviolet light in the presence of oxygen. PCO drives a chemical process on the metal’s surface that breaks apart organic molecules in the air. Not only did this process take care of the ethylene problem, but researchers also discovered that the PCO system they had created could destroy the cell walls of bacteria. Also, take apart viruses, decompose mold, spore other allergens both in the air and on surfaces.
So, although their technology generated safe, purified air in the intimate environment of the space station, it did not have a practical earth-based function until a company called Aerus invested over 10 million dollars in getting the patent and further improving the technology. After several years of product research and development, they produced a purification system called ActivePure®.
Their ActivePure® system uses ambient moisture in the air to release hydroxyls and oxidizers from the PCO process into the air. They discovered that the ActivePure® molecules could be “blasted out” over a 3000 square foot area after they made several system advancements. Where they not only deactivated airborne contaminants, but these molecules also settled on surfaces all over the exact spot where they completely eradicated pathogens living on those surfaces.
Knowing they were unto something big, the Aerus founders re-named their company ActivePure®, developed a 500,000 square foot facility in Bristol, Virginia to manufacture the units, and then set out to tell the world what they had discovered.

However, they soon realized that most people did not get it. Many of these individuals equated the ActivePure® technology with traditional, passive air filter systems such as HEPA and MERV-13 filters. These systems remove contaminants only if the pollutants pass through the purification unit. Besides, UVC light only works if the toxins get close to the light for several seconds.
Many people did not understand that the ActivePure® system is simply this: It is NOT an air filter!! Instead, the ActivePure® system creates purifying plasma that travels to the contaminants. The particles move at about 1200 feet per second, sending the solution to the pollution. In other words, this system seeks out. It destroys odors, germs, pollutants, poisons, toxic chemicals, etc., wherever they are ─ in the air, on surfaces, in cracks and crevices, behind walls, in ceilings and attics, in closets, between floors everywhere within a 3000 square foot area. They were completing triplicate tests according to FDA guidelines and protocols. The testing included spraying the SARS-CoV-2 virus into a test chamber at extremely high concentrations (7+ logs, or over 10 million particles per milliliter). Within 3 minutes, the ActivePure® Technology-based Air & Surface Pro units, calibrated to their lowest setting of only 29 cubic feet (about the volume of a large refrigerator) per minute of air movement, reduced the concentration of the COVID-19 virus to no more than 1.6 logs, a reduction of 99.96%. The lab was only able to measure down to 1.6 logs, so the actual outcomes of the experiments indeed resulted in a 100% eradication of the virus!!
