Q: Dr. Maxey, what causes back pain?

A: Back pain can stem from the bones, muscles, connective tissue, and nerves in your back. It’s highly variable in severity and description. For example, back pain can be dull and throbbing, sharp and shooting, or even feel electrical.
You could have chronic back pain that is either constant or intermittent. Lower back pain is common, but you can also have pain in your middle or upper back.
This variability is in part due to the vast range of causes, including:
• Strained muscles
• Muscle spasm or trigger points
• Herniated discs
• Degenerative disc disease
• Vertebral fractures
• Osteoarthritis
• Osteoporosis
• Scoliosis
• Spinal stenosis
• Sacroiliac (SI) joint problems
• Sciatica
Your risk of back pain increases with age and if you’re overweight. A sedentary lifestyle or a physically demanding career can also raise your chances of developing back pain.

About Us

Acute and Chronic Pain

Acute pain refers to pain that occurs immediately after an injury and lasts no longer than two months when treated properly. On the other hand, chronic pain is any type of pain that lasts six months or longer. Chronic pain can be difficult to treat because:

  • The source or cause can be hard to determine

  • Pain varies from one person to the next
