Hello from Stephanie! đ
Hey there, mamas and dads! It is that time of year again â the flowers are blooming, the trees are pollinating, and our kiddos are sneezing up a storm. As your neighborhood nurse practitioner, I want to arm you with simple, easy tips to help your family get through this season feeling their best. đŒ Surviving Allergy Season:
Tips Every Parent Should Know
Seasonal allergies happen when your body reacts to things in the air like pollen, mold, and grass. For kids, this can look like sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes, or even just feeling tired and cranky.
Here is what you can do to help: After Playing Outside Pollen sticks to skin, hair, and clothes. When your child comes inside after outdoor play, make it a habit to:
â
Have them wash their hands right away
â
Give them a quick shower or bath to rinse off any pollen on their skin and hair
â
Change their clothes so they are not wearing outdoor allergens for the rest of the day
This one simple habit can make a HUGE difference, especially for kids who struggle with seasonal allergies.
Keep the Bedroom a Safe Zone: Your child spends 8 to 10 hours in their bedroom every night. You want that space to be as allergen-free as possible. Keep bedroom windows closed during allergy season, even on pretty days. Open windows let pollen float right in while your child sleeps. Use an air purifier in their room. It filters out allergens floating in the air and can make a real difference in how they feel. A humidifier can also help by keeping the airways moist, which makes it easier to breathe and can reduce irritation.
âš Stephanieâs Secret Weapon: Elderberry! This is my personal go-to during allergy flare-ups: elderberry syrup taken daily. Elderberry is known for supporting the immune system and helping the body manage inflammation. My favorite is from McKinney Elderberry Co. because they use LOCAL honey in their syrup â and local honey is special! Exposing your body to small amounts of local pollen through honey may help reduce your sensitivity over time. Itâs like a little natural boost for allergy season.
Always check with your childâs doctor before starting any new supplement, especially for children under 1 year old.
Over-the-Counter Allergy Medications
There are some great OTC options to help manage symptoms.
