Hello from Stephanie! 👋
Hey there, mamas and dads! April is here, and with warmer weather comes more time outside — which is wonderful! But spring also brings something less fun: rashes. From hives to eczema flare-ups to bug bites, this time of year can leave parents staring at their kid’s skin and wondering, “Should I be worried about this? That is exactly what I want to help you with this month. I am breaking down the most common rashes I see in kids, what they look like, and most importantly — when you can handle it at home and when it is time to call me.
🔍 Know Your Rash: What Are You Looking At?
Not all rashes are the same, and knowing what you’re dealing with can help you stay calm and take the right next step.
Here is a quick guide to three of the most common rashes we see in spring:
1. Hives (Allergic Reaction) Hives look like raised, red, or pink welts on the skin that can appear suddenly and may move around or change shape. They are usually very itchy. Hives are most often triggered by:
•A new food, medication, or supplement
• Insect stings or bites
• Contact with a new soap, detergent, or lotion
• A viral illness
Most hives are uncomfortable but not dangerous. They often clear up on their own within a few hours to a day or two.
2. Eczema Flare-Ups Eczema shows up as dry, red, scaly, and extremely itchy patches of skin. In kids, it often appears on the cheeks, behind the knees, and inside the elbows. Spring can trigger flare-ups because of pollen, sweat, and changes in humidity. Signs of a flare include:
• Skin that looks dry and cracked
• Patches that are red, raw, or oozing slightly
• Your child scratching constantly, especially at night
3. Bug Bite Reactions Mosquitoes, fire ants, and other insects are very active in spring in North Texas. Most bug bites cause a small, red, itchy bump. Some kids have stronger reactions, especially to fire ant stings, which can cause a cluster of fluid-filled bumps called pustules. This is normal and not dangerous unless your child shows signs of a serious allergic reaction.
4. Impetigo — A Spring Skin Infection to Watch. For Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection that becomes really common in spring and summer when kids are playing outside and sharing close contact with each other. It is caused by staph or strep bacteria and spreads easily.
Here is what impetigo looks like:
• Red sores, often around the nose and mouth, that quickly burst and leave a honeycolored or yellowish crust
• It can also look like fluid-filled blisters that break open
• The area around the sore may be red and irritated
Impetigo is very contagious, so if you notice these signs, keep your child home from school and avoid sharing towels or clothing. This one usually needs a prescription antibiotic.
⚠ When to Worry vs. When to Wait It Out
✅ You Can Likely Wait It Out If...
• The rash is itchy but your child is acting normal and not in distress
• Hives appear after a known trigger and are not spreading rapidly
• An eczema patch is red and dry but not cracked open or oozing yellow fluid
• A bug bite is small, localized, and improving over 24 to 48 hours
• Your child has no fever and is eating, drinking, and playing normally
📞 Call Mom's Choice If...
• The rash is not improving after a couple of days of home care
• You see yellow discharge or crusty yellow scabs — this may mean infection and could need a topical or oral antibiotic
• You suspect impetigo — it spreads fast and needs treatment
• The rash is spreading quickly or covering a large area of the body
• Your child has a fever along with the rash
• The rash is painful, not just itchy
🚨 Go to the ER Immediately If... These are signs of a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) and need emergency care right away:
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Difficulty breathing, wheezing, or a hoarse voice
• Vomiting or dizziness along with hives
• Your child suddenly seems very unwell, pale, or limp
🏠 Home Treatment Tips from Stephanie
For Hives:
• Give an antihistamine like Children’s Benadryl or Zyrtec to reduce itching and swelling
• A cool, wet cloth on the skin can help soothe the itch
• Avoid hot baths, which can make hives worse
• Try to identify and remove the trigger if you can
For Eczema Flare-Ups:
• Apply over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream to angry, red, inflamed patches — this is my go-to first step and it works really well for calming irritated skin
• Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize — right after bath time while skin is still a little damp
• Keep your child’s nails trimmed short so they don’t break the skin when they scratch
• Dress them in loose, soft, breathable clothing — avoid anything scratchy or tight • If the skin looks yellow, crusty, or is oozing, it may be infected and needs a topical antibiotic
For Bug Bites:
• Wash the area with soap and water right away
• Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling
• Hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion can help with itching
• Keep your child from scratching — broken skin can lead to infection
🌟 Product Spotlight: Ora’s Amazing Herbal
Touchy Skin Salve — A Natural Hero for Eczema-Prone Kids. I love supporting independent makers who create products with real purpose, and Ora’s Amazing Herbal is exactly that. Ora originally made this salve at home in 2010 to help manage her own daughter’s eczema — and it worked so well she turned it into a business. How amazing is that? Their Touchy Skin Salve is specially formulated for eczema and sensitive skin. It is completely fragrance-free and contains no essential oils, which makes it a great option for kids with very reactive skin. It uses a base of non-GMO grapeseed oil slowly infused with organic herbs like calendula, comfrey, and licorice root — which has natural antiinflammatory properties to help calm and soothe irritated skin. Pro tip from Ora: apply right after bath time while skin is still soft, and use a thin layer massaged gently in. For kids who struggle season after season, alternating between the salve, a body butter, and an oil can help keep their skin balanced as conditions change. Always do a small patch test on sensitive skin before using any new product, and check with your provider if your child has a known coconut sensitivity.
