Have you ever wondered why there’s no “flu season” in tropical climates? There are multiple easily modifiable environmental factors that you can use to your advantage.
* Humidity: Consistently humid conditions make airborne viral transmission more difficult in many cases. Hence, there’s no cyclical flu surge like we experience here in Texas. When everyone goes indoors, turns on the heat and the air gets dry…BOOM! We have the perfect conditions for the spread of illness. The ideal indoor humidity for decreased viral transmission is 30-60%. Personally, I try to keep our home at about 45% humidity. You can use diffusers, humidifiers and simmer pots to quickly and easily increase the humidity in your home.
* Temperature: Maintain indoor temps in a comfortable range in conjunction with ideal humidity. Cool indoor temperatures foster a friendly environment for heat sensitive viruses such as Influenza and they spread more easily. Making your home too warm is a set up for mold. You need it to be like Baby Bear's porridge..."just right".
* UV light: The sun really is a disinfectant! Open your windows and doors and get outside!
