Manufacturer savings cards were completely different differently from the discount cards and part one – these actually subsidize the cost of your medication.

Here’s what that looks like in real life:
If a medication costs $1000 and your insurance covers half, you’re left with a $500 co-pay. A manufacturer savings card can drop your cost to something like $25. The manufacturer pays the rest. The pharmacy gets fully reimbursed. And unlike discount cards, there’s no fee taken out of the pharmacy’s payment.

But there are rules:
•They can’t be used with Medicare or Medicaid
• Some won’t work if your co-pay is above a certain amount.
• Many have monthly or annual contribution limits.
• If the card only covers $150 and your co-pay is 500, your real cost is $350 – not $25.

This is why reading the fine print matters… Or why having a Pharmacist to understand these programs makes your life a whole lot easier.

Savings cards come in two categories and part one is all about the GoodRX style discount cards. These don’t use your insurance at all-they simply give you a cash price that’s been negotiated through a PBM network. That’s why they’re so transparent and easy to compare.

But here’s the part most people never hear because their claim runs through a PBM network. Your prescription data is shared in the process and since these cards only negotiate cash prices, they don’t help with brand medications. They also charge pharmacies a fee every time they’re used.

At my pharmacy, I’ll match the cash price so you still get the savings I just don’t run the card that way you keep the discount without the data sharing and me without the extra fees.

Part 2 of my insurance audit story.

This is about the time it takes.

It took me 6.5 hours to gather and review everything they asked for. That time doesn’t come from a magical extra bucket—it comes from me.

This whole process was exhausting, and honestly, I’m upset. But I’ve submitted it, and I’ll update you when I hear back.

Insurance audits are a part of independent pharmacy life—but most people have no idea what they actually involve.

For this audit, I was asked to pull documentation for 57 prescriptions. It’s soooo much paperwork. If I don’t comply, they can take back every dollar they paid me. If I do comply and they decide something isn’t documented “their way,” they can still take it back.

This is the reality of small businesses dealing with healthcare insurance.
