The first of many girl chats! 🤗
Maybe you’ve heard the term ‘supply and demand’ a hundred times. But what does that actually mean for your body?
Think of your supply like an ice machine. Every time you scoop a little ice out, it makes more. And your breasts work in a similar way.
The more you remove milk, by nursing or pumping, you send your body the message ‘Hey, my baby needs more. Keep it coming!’
But if you start skipping feeds, dropping pumps, or go long stretches without stimulation. Your body hears the opposite: ‘Oh, we’re good, dial it back.’ And it does. Your body will start producing less.
But here’s the thing; supply isn’t only about stimulation. Your health history matters (e.g., history of PCOS, Thyroid imbalances, anemia, etc.), your nutrition + hydration, whether your baby is efficiently transferring milk at your breast, fl**ge size, pump & pump settings. It ALL plays a role! 😲
So if something feels off, that’s worth looking into with a board certified lactation consultant! (That’s me! 👋🏽)
Remember this: we can protect your supply by removing milk regularly and effectively. Day AND night. AND if there are concerns, we wanna make sure we’ve ruled out or addressed any other factors that could be impacting milk production.
