Meet Carey Politzer, MD, fellowship-trained hip and knee replacement specialist. His focus is treating hip and knee arthritis. “What I love most about this work is that I can help make people significantly better. I see people who struggle to walk around the block and then return them to their favorite hiking trail or back to the links. That is my motivation,” Dr. Politzer said. Upon graduating with his medical degree at Duke University, Dr. Politzer completed his postgraduate residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California San Diego. When your back or neck problem is severe enough and has not responded to conservative measures, your doctor may recommend a spinal injection. Spinal injections are used in two ways:
• To diagnose the source of back, leg, neck, or arm pain (diagnostic).
• As a treatment to relieve pain (therapeutic).

Most spinal injections are performed as one part of a more comprehensive treatment program. Simultaneous treatment nearly always includes an exercise program to improve or maintain spinal mobility (stretching exercises) and stability (strengthening exercises).
Spinal injections are performed under X-ray guidance, called fluoroscopy, to confirm correct placement of the medication and improve safety.
