Is your goal really your goal? Maybe you should quit, maybe it’s not worth the effort. How do you know?

This exercise from Dan John is one of the best things you can do in the gym. Decide if it’s really worth it. Draw up four quadrants with Success and Failure towards your goal on one axis and Good and Bad consequences on the other.

We all know the good stuff of success, you’ll feel better and everyone will think you’re awesome! We know the pain of failure too, letting ourselves and others down.

But what is Good about Failing? What will you like about not succeeding? What is Bad about Succeeding? What will suck about winning? We miss this side of the coin and it’s important to see the situation clearly. It’s not all good to win, you’ll have to give up some stuff. Is it worth it?

And you’ll enjoy parts of failing too, are you sure you’re willing to give up these things? I joke with clients often that there are two ways to hit a goal- hit it or quit and decide you didn’t really want it anyway and now you can stop beating yourself up about it.

Draw yourself some quadrants!

The most important thing in strength training? Working really hard for a really long time! It’s hard and uncomfortable and life gets in the way. To be Unstoppable you have to find a way to get it done anyway. It’s not that obstacles don’t arise, it’s figuring out how to overcome them, and the next one, and the next one. No one will do it for you and the lights will never be all green, but you have to start the journey anyway, and keep going.

Big congratulations to Irv celebrating his 5 year training anniversary! From Olympic lifting to a powerlifting meet to split squats with a broken ankle, Irv has found a way forward. The secret is there is no secret. Cheers to a lifetime of strength! Way to go Irv!

What if you forgot everything you know about strength training?

You wake up with your mind erased, and you decide you want to be healthy and stronger. Where would you begin? What things would you do with your body? How would you know you’re making progress?

This is a useful thought because it sifts through the information overload that constantly bombards us. It used to be true that people didn’t have enough good training information, but now it’s more common for people to have too much. Erasing your brain and simplifying the process can remind you what you’re trying to accomplish. Doing more over time.

The information overload paralyzes us, as we look for the perfect method, or newest exercise, and there’s always something else that we are not doing. We then end up floundering about, and stopping and starting and not trusting our own intuition. You probably do know the answer to your problem. Are you doing what you already know to be good for you? The reason you’re not making progress probably isn’t because there is some fact out there that you have yet to acquire.

So forget everything you know, and simplify the process as much as possible. Can you do more than you did yesterday? How do you continue to make progress? Just don’t stop training!

Spot the Next Fitness Trend

Have you ever noticed that fitness trends always follow the same cycle? There is a new innovation/discovery (or rediscovery) that gets people excited. This one thing will fix everything! All failures are because we haven’t been doing this new thing! Goodbye difficulty, hello success and ease for everyone; always!

As I’m sure you can guess, the initial excitement wears off. Limitations to the method are found, and it becomes trendy to write and talk about how the new thing is actually BAD. It hurts your fitness and doing it is the epitome of stupidity!

Then comes the last phase when sensible minds prevail, and it’s realized that the new thing is good in some situations, but not others, and it provides some benefits, but isn’t a panacea. Then here comes a BRAND NEW THING!

This cycle is funny to watch because it happens over and over again. From the Zone diet to CrossFit to Kinesiotape to Cold Tubs. They all rise and fall, from hero to villain to something in between. There’s even a name for this cycle, the Gartner Hype Cycle, and it spans industries. It looks like this ⬆️

So the next time you hear a news story, or talk at the water cooler about the NEXT NEW THING THAT WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING, remember this line from famous investor John Templeton-

“The four most dangerous words in the English language are, ‘This time, it’s different.’”

The author you didn’t know you needed to be a better fitness professional- Deborah Tannen!

She is a professor at Georgetown and has written extensively about conversational style. We all talk fast or slow, directly or indirectly, with interruptions or without, often without even noticing. We notice when someone has a different style however and then often attribute it to a personality trait (usually negative)

You interrupt me because you’re a jerk!

She’s always talking over me

He speaks slowly because he’s dumb

But these differences in style are just that, a difference of style. We can struggle to connect with someone of a different style and most of our friends probably share a style. When connecting with clients it’s not about changing or copying someone’s style, but you should realize how it colors so many human interactions and this awareness can be a game changer. Trainers know you need soft skills, but how can you learn or improve them? Read Deborah Tannen!

Everything she has written is great so you can really start anywhere.
