Let’s Help Seniors Stay Safe in the Heat! ☀️
With the extreme heat in our area right now, we all need to take precautions. But the effects of the heat are magnified on seniors, and we all need to take care of each other.
Here are some key tips to keep the seniors in your life safe and comfortable:
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and excessive caffeine, as these can actually dehydrate you.
Seek Cool Environments: Spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned places. If you don't have AC at home, visit a local senior center, mall, library, or movie theater. Even a few hours in a cool place can make a big difference.
Dress for the Heat: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing. Natural fabrics like cotton are best for breathability.
Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. If you must go outside, do so in the early morning or late evening.
Know the Warning Signs: Be aware of symptoms of heat-related illness like dizziness, nausea, headache, heavy sweating, or confusion. If you experience these, get to a cool place immediately and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
Check On Each Other: If you have senior friends, family, or neighbors, give them a call or stop by (if it's safe to do so) to make sure they're doing okay in the heat. A quick check-in can save a life!
Stay safe and cool everyone! Let's look out for each other. ❤️
