A new study has demonstrated that vitamin C supplementation can improve glycemic control and blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes. Previous research has shown that patients with type 2 diabetes have lower plasma vitamin C levels and therefore, have greater vitamin C requirements. In the study, ascorbic acid supplementation significantly decreased daily postprandial glucose, postprandial hyperglycemia, and time spent in hyperglycemia. In addition, compared to placebo, systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased an average of 7 mmHg and 5 mmHg, respectively.
