Obat Helpers USA

Obat Helpers USA In 2004, OBAT started serving an unfortunate and forgotten group of people, commonly known as Bihari or Urdu Speaking (formerly known as stranded Pakistanis).

OBAT Helpers is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit empowering marginalized and displaced communities in Bangladesh through education, healthcare, WASH, livelihoods, youth development, and emergency relief. OBAT Helpers is a US based 501(C) (3), non-profit organization committed to providing aid, support, education, and economic empowerment to displaced, stranded and refugee populations residing in camps in Bangladesh. Over 300,000 of them are living in 116 makeshift camps in 13 different cities throughout Bangladesh since 1971. More than three generations of this community continue to live in 8 ft. x 10 ft. spaces in abject poverty, with no access to basic amenities. They face a severe lack of education, healthcare and income earning opportunities. OBAT Helpers has been instrumental in providing opportunities for growth and transformation to this community through the areas of education, health, infrastructure development, empowerment and relief. Since September 2017, OBAT has also been in the forefront of serving Rohingya refugees after the crises erupted in August 2017. The Rohingya escaped from persecution and genocide in Myanmar to seek protection in Bangladesh. With the crisis unfolding at the doorstep of OBAT’s projects, the organization made a strategic decision to provide humanitarian assistance in the immediate aftermath and apply solutions and lessons learned from the Urdu-speaking camps to help the recently displaced individuals. OBAT’s current relief strategy in the Rohingya camps addresses the medical, educational, nutritional and emergency needs of the refugees. OBAT also provides empowerment opportunities to Rohingya women by training them to sew. Since 2004...

· 27,196 students have graduated from OBAT's educational projects for internally displaced camp communities

· Nearly 900 students are enrolled annually in Learning Centers for Rohingya refugees

· Over 3,000 people have been empowered from OBAT's sewing centers and livelihood programs

· 329,720 patients have been treated at OBAT's health clinics

· Approx. 150,000 people have benefited from OBAT's clean water and sanitation projects

· 604,895 people have been aided by OBAT's family assistance and qurbani programs

Celebrating Global Handwashing Day with Awareness and Action!

We extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to our incredible teams in Chattogram, Bogura, Rangpur, and Syedpur for successfully organizing awareness activities in honor of Global Handwashing Day.

Washing hands with soap is one of the simplest yet most powerful acts to protect ourselves and our communities from germs and diseases. This small habit can prevent many infectious illnesses, saving countless lives.

At OBAT Helpers, we believe that change begins with awareness. Though this initiative may seem small, together, we are taking meaningful steps toward building a healthier, more conscious society, one clean hand at a time.

Meet Md. Towfiqe, a 23-year-old from Rangpur whose determination turned hardship into hope. After losing his father in 2018, Towfiqe continued his studies with the support of his grandfather, a local barber. Unable to afford computer training elsewhere, he joined the OBAT Computer Training Center, where he started from scratch, even learning how to use a mouse.

Through dedication, he completed Office Application and Graphics Design courses. His skills and perseverance led him to a job as a Computer Operator at OBAT Healthcare Center, Rangpur.

Today, Towfiqe supports his education with his income and expresses heartfelt gratitude to OBAT Helpers and all its donors for transforming his life.

We were honored to welcome Saima Hassan, former Development Director at OBAT Helpers, during her visit to our projects in Bangladesh.

For nearly 14 years, Saima led OBAT’s communications and development efforts, helping empower displaced communities and strengthen the foundation of our work. Today, she continues to serve as an Advisor to OBAT, while contributing to the broader field of philanthropy through her role at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University, where she focuses on advancing the Muslim nonprofit and philanthropic sector.

Our team was overjoyed to share with her the lasting impact of the programs she helped build. We are deeply grateful for her dedication, vision, and continued support of OBAT’s mission.

📸 First Time in Bangladesh — Fundraising for Bangladeshi Nonprofits Training!

Alhamdulillah, the past week concluded with another milestone for Bangladesh’s nonprofit community. For the first time, OBAT Helpers, in collaboration with the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative (MPI), Lilly Family School of Philanthropy – Indiana University (USA), UMR Institute, and the Center for Zakat Management (CZM), hosted an international-standard two-day training on Fundraising for Bangladeshi Nonprofits.

Held from 2–3 October, the sessions were conducted by Dr. Shariq Siddiqui, Assistant Professor and Director of MPI at Indiana University. The training focused on practical strategies for donor engagement, resource mobilization, and developing sustainable fundraising models. Participants from a wide range of NGOs, INGOs, foundations, and community-based organizations came together to learn, share, and explore innovative ways to strengthen their organizations’ financial sustainability and impact.

This training was more than a learning program — it was a space of collaboration, inspiration, and renewed purpose. The energy, openness, and dedication of participants over these two days reflected the true potential of Bangladesh’s social sector to grow stronger through shared learning and collective action.

At OBAT, we believe this is another step forward in building a culture of strategic giving and leadership within our nonprofit ecosystem. These sessions have sparked new ideas, partnerships, and commitments that will continue shaping a more sustainable and impactful future for development work in Bangladesh.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Shariq Siddiqui for his invaluable guidance, and to all our partners, facilitators, and participants who made this milestone possible. Together, we are reimagining how philanthropy and fundraising can transform communities and drive long-term change.

🌍 First Time in Bangladesh — Philanthropic Leadership and Fundraising Training!

Alhamdulillah, last week marked a defining moment for Bangladesh’s nonprofit sector. For the first time, OBAT Helpers, in collaboration with the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative (MPI), Lilly School of Philanthropy – Indiana University (USA), UMR Institute, and the Center for Zakat Management (CZM), brought global expertise to Bangladesh through a landmark, international-standard training series on Philanthropy, Leadership, and Fundraising.

From 29 September to 1 October, the Philanthropic Leadership and Management for Nonprofits training, led by Dr. Shariq Siddiqui, Assistant Professor and Director of MPI at Indiana University, engaged participants in thought-provoking sessions on leadership, governance, and sustainable giving. The sessions encouraged reflection, dialogue, and transformation — empowering participants to reimagine their organizations as purpose-driven, transparent, and resilient institutions.

This initiative was not just a training — it was a movement of learning, reflection, and reconnection. It united visionary nonprofit leaders, academicians, corporate professionals, and donors under one roof with a shared goal: to elevate the spirit and practice of philanthropy in Bangladesh.

At OBAT, we see this as the beginning of a larger journey — one that cultivates leadership rooted in compassion, collaboration, and accountability. These sessions have sown the seeds of partnership, innovation, and shared purpose that will continue to grow across Bangladesh’s development ecosystem.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Shariq Siddiqui for his incredible mentorship, and to all our partners, facilitators, and participants who made this milestone possible. Together, we are proving that Bangladesh has the talent, the heart, and the vision to lead global conversations on effective philanthropy and nonprofit leadership.

The journey has begun - and OBAT is grateful to be convening such cutting edge training. The future looks bright!

On the occasion of International Day of Older Persons, OBAT Think Tank in different cities organized a joyful program with the elderly women and men.

The day was filled with fun activities and games designed for them. All the elderly present were gifted prayer beads (tasbih), which filled them with happiness and gratitude. During the program, the elderly shared their life stories and experiences, which were inspiring and heart-touching for everyone present.

Finally, as a gesture of love, respect, and honor towards the elderly, a special meal was arranged for them. It was truly a memorable day spreading love, respect, and joy among the elderly, because their smiles are our greatest reward and they are very important for our communities.
