Be still and listen

“Go, go, go, said the bird: human kind cannot bear very much reality.”

...to be still and watch, wait and listen to your own still small voice within.

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks not just on Thursday but as a life style. During this time of COVID where so much of life is turned upside down and inside out finding the littlest things to be grateful for can help with feeling grounded. Each day either in the morning or before bed look up into the sky, take a deep breath of fresh air and search your heart for three things to be grateful for. This time of loss of the familiar opens up new spaces through gratitude to discover promptings of creating life to the fullest, yes even in a pandemic.

Working through telemedicine is fundamentally different and more difficult than when people are together in a beautiful office.
However for now this is the best choice offered than meeting in person, behind masks, screens, disinfectants, physical distance, ventilation, symptom monitoring, contact tracing, and the stress involved. These harsh realities of COVID -19 are highlighted when discussing the risks and rewards of in the office meetings. Therapy is a place to feel safe. Safety, physical and psychological safety are the bedrock of psychotherapy or psychoanalysis. A life-altering infection is not coming into the work of psychotherapy here thru telemedicine.

Past, Present and Future seem to be the space I am living in. Marked by uncertainty with two major catastrophes there is too-muchness to process. That is the mark of trauma, too-muchness, and yet the mind and heart demand to make sense out of what is happening to life as I know it. Trauma deconstructs the ground we walk on and disrupts life as we know this. Watch a modern-day lynching to hear the words of 'Momma help" be called out, or monuments being toppled, or the faces of families outside of nursing homes who can't get in to comfort loved ones, We are shaken by these images of cities on fire, What does the world mean to you, to me as the ground shifts beneath my feet of change. I long for the old days, of family vacations, family in my home, patients in my office but this is an opportunity in the midst of the ashes. Opportunities to get working again on the meaning of life, love, family, work, play. Make an effort, one day at a time and if you are having trouble, let me know, or a psychoanalyst know. We are working hard as mental health providers to use our skills to deal with the vulnerability change. The mystery of our faith, if you have faith is something bigger than yourself, is now more than ever. So be still, meditate on the luminous mysteries of the rosary while you work out your fears, your concerns, your losses, and through the cracks, as Leonard Cohen sings so beautifully, "the ight is coming in ."

Finding your center will only happen by looking within. The external world is turned inside out, upside down and sideways. We are in the midst of making history. Each person however is triggered by these world events based on individual history. Be still and know that your inner voice is the best guide of all. IF you have trouble staying centered therapy may help unblock the light from shining through.
