MYTH: PT is only for people with injuries.
FACT: PT is a powerful ally in managing chronic issues, improving posture, and improving sports performance in the aging athlete (looking at my Gen X folks). While we may not be 20 something, we can adapt to the age related changes our bodies go through with grace and long term wellness.

Tips to prioritize your physical health:
1) Rest and recovery-REST ie sleep is essential to allow your body to recover from workouts and long "stressful" days. Other aspects of recovery is to stretch, hydrate and refuel to optimize how your body rebuilds itself.
2) Regular movement- For best results, move everyday. Whether it's walking, housework, yardwork, working out at the gym...motion is lotion. If you fall into a sedentary lifestyle of little movement, your body will adapt to that LACK of activity in the form of stiffness, pain, decreased mobility and maybe even the loss of your independence.
3) Listen to your body-BUT not too loudly. On one end of the spectrum, there are those that will just grind out workouts because it's what they do or it's what's on the training schedule failing to take into account other factors. On the other end, you have those who shy away from activity at the first sign of ANY discomfort not knowing whether it's a productive "discomfort" or if it's a "stop something's wrong discomfort". Let's face it, exercise and working out is work. There will be some degree of effort and discomfort that will go into it IF you want to build a stronger, fitter body. If it was easy, everyone would do it, right?

It's Selection Sunday! One of my favorite times of year only enhanced when my alma mater will make runs (ladies and the men, the women have a better chance, but stranger things have happened) for another championship. Who else is excited for another round of March Madness excitement?

Women who also maybe moms or caregivers, tend to put their own needs on the back burner while trying to juggle the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Ladies...you are only as good and effective a mom or caregiver if you are at your best. If your body is breaking down, you can't give your best self. Do yourself a favor, and take of you. Your family or friends will understand. You don't need to take on the world by yourself. Be the best version of yourself for the people you love.

Has Daylight Savings wrecked your body clock this week?

Sleep is important for your body to recover and rebuild. Poor sleep can lead to chronic long term issues with your body such as not being able to recover from exercise or the prior day's activities (mental and physical). This can lead to increased cortisol levels (stress), slowed metabolism, hypertension, depression, heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Aim to get 7-8 hrs of sleep each night. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time while keeping your meals at consistent times as well. Your body has a natural rhythm it likes to stay with, if it's all wonky, then your sleep will suffer.

3 Tips to Avoid Injury this Spring:
1) Warm up and dynamic stretching prior to activity
2) Stay hydrated throughout the day. If you're doing a cardio session for more than 45-60 min, consider sports drinks to make sure your electrolytes are topped off for optimal continued performance
3) Strengthen muscles that need attention along with all the muscles that do heavy hitting.

TIP OF THE DAY

Don't skip your stretching! I'm looking at you aging athletes. We might have blown off the stretching in our 20's, but flexibility shouldn't be overlooked. By your 40's, you might realize, "I don't bend that way anymore". It's not too late. You can get some or all of it back if you stretch consistently as part of your self care and body maintenance. Your body will thank you and you will also decrease your chances for injury.

??? Question of the Day ????

What's the most common mistake people make when starting sports in the spring?

ANSWER: Doing too much, too soon. The weather breaks, you can get outside, and you've got your goal event in sight. However, all the enthusiasm can get you in trouble. Much like the well intentioned new year's resolutions, the lure of spring weather and races around the corner to "catch up" with lost training can bite you in the back side.

Consistency in training and workouts is the thing that will get you to the start line healthy. The race is the victory lap for all the hard work you've put in.

Aging athletes (I'm talking to you 40 plus folks) NEED to warm up prior to their activities/workouts. Our muscles just don't move as readily as our younger selves so it's important to ease into our activities and then work some mobility to "prime" ourselves. Once you get going, then the body is willing to do it's thing. Even cool downs are beneficial in helping to flush out any residual waste our body produces when we "work". Static stretching or just easy walking/spinning, let's the body get back to a baseline.
