Preparing a field for planting next season. Not sure if it will be ready for spring or fall but here we go.

First we mowed the field short then I watered it down and sprayed a soil primer from Advancing Eco Agriculture. The brilliant soil and plant nutrition specialists that are saving my farm.

Secondly I poured buckets of kitchen waste down the row. You could spread compost or garden waste or farm manure, keeping in mind that animal manure needs to be used VERY SPARINGLY. Lastly I spread pelleted gypsum for calcium.

Then I spread large sheets of cardboard. Thank you so much to the folks from F7 Work Activity Center for the cardboard from their recycling center and the what they do in providing a meaningful work program for the developmentally challenged..

Next we poked holes in the cardboard, watered it down, sprayed again with a light solution of soil primer and then spread a 4-6" inch layer of chopped wood waste. After it rains again I will spray the chips once more with soil primer.

Why do all of this ? I have three goals.
1. , Kill the tough bermuda grass,
2. Quickly break down the cardboard and wood waste so It can be
used as a soil amendment for my sandy soil.
3, Add healthy microbes and nutrients to the soil that give the crops
a head start against cutworms and other nasty crop issues.

Garden sighting: Yellow Garden Spider and her egg sac

As the weather cools, it’s almost time for Yellow Garden Spiders (Argiope aurantia) to die off, but they leave behind egg sacs holding between 300 and over 1,000 eggs! These eggs will remain dormant until next year when temperatures warm up. Despite their impressive size, these fascinating spiders are harmless to humans and play a valuable role in controlling insect populations. Have you spotted any of these in your garden this season?

Whats currently happening in the greenhouse from right to left. Peppers that are just about done with an understory of snow peas starting. The isle row is spread with a thick matt of straw . The next row is Ruby June strawberries then garlic then strawberries.
Next we have green beans that we are STILL harvesting on NOV 13th WOW, with an understory of Cilantro. Next, Napa Cabbage then Cauliflower and lettuce with an understory of spinach starting. Next Isle is a thick matt of unsprayed straw to raise fertility for next year with dark landscape fabric over that to keep soil warmer. Then Strawberries and garlic, then a row of edible greens that do double duty as a cover crop and finally more strawberries. AND THE BEST PART NO HERBACIDES OR PESTACIDES. We only apply nutrients as needed.
