Today, we remember every life lost to overdose. Every name is a story. Every story matters.

This day is for remembrance—but also for action. Let’s talk openly about substance use, end stigma, and advocate for compassionate, evidence-based care.

Today, we honor the generations of women who’ve fought—and continue to fight—for equality, safety, and the right to be heard. At StepOne Service, our care is gender-responsive, trauma-informed, and rooted in equity. Together, let’s build a world where equality is a reality.

There is a BIG GAP and unmet need in treatment. Among the 39.6 million adults with an SUD who did not receive treatment, 94.7% did not even believe they needed it. Only 5.3% had a perceived unmet need, and just 0.5% actively sought care.

StepOne Service is here to provide awareness, education and care—to fill the gaps in our communities with medically assisted programs.

In recovery, language matters—and so does our response when someone uses again.

A lapse is a short return to substance use. A relapse usually means a longer pattern. Why this matters: Calling a lapse a relapse can make people feel like they’ve failed—but they haven’t. A lapse might be part of the process.

Recovery is not a straight line—it's a journey. When people stumble, choose language that supports and not shames the individual.

TIPs = Treatment Improvement Protocols—evidence-based recommendations from SAMHSA for supporting people with substance use disorder, mental health and other co-occuring disorders.

At StepOne Service, we use TIPs to guide how we deliver withdrawal management and recovery care. This means every protocol is based on what works—not guesswork.

The way we talk about substance use can either reinforce stigma—or break it. When we use recovery-oriented language, we affirm dignity, recognize humanity and support recovery.

Recovery-oriented language says:
+ You are more than your diagnosis
+ You are not your past
+ You are worthy of care

We speak hope. We speak dignity. We speak truth.

Please meet Carrie Harris, our Service Coordinator at StepOne Service SSM St. Mary's Jefferson City!

_______

My background includes professional experience and personal insight into recovery and advocacy, which gives me a deeper understanding of the people I work with. I'm working toward a degree in Human Services and plan to continue my journey into forensic psychology. For me, this work is about more than just services; it's about meeting people where they are, walking alongside them, and believing in their ability to grow and heal. I have an adult son who is in personal finance, and I could not be prouder of him and his success! His ability to connect with people and help them achieve their financial goals is truly inspiring. He leads with integrity, empathy, and a genuine desire to see others thrive; qualities that make him not only successful in his field but also someone others can genuinely trust.

StepOne Service has given me the ability to work with individuals like myself. It has afforded me opportunities I have never had and the confidence to carry the message of recovery and hope to my community. This is more than a job to me; it is my life's calling!

Self-care isn’t always easy. It's not selfish—it's essential. And sometimes, it's the courageous decision to ask for help.

This Self-Care Day, we honor those taking brave steps toward recovery—and the loved ones, caregivers and mental health professionals walking alongside them.
Your well-being matters too.

It’s mid-month—take a moment to pause and check in with yourself.

🧍 How’s your body feeling?
💭 How’s your mind holding up?
💪 Are you carrying more than you need to alone?

Checking in with yourself (or someone you care about) isn’t just important—it’s powerful.
And if you realize you’re not okay, asking for help is not a weakness. It’s a healthy act of self-awareness and strength.
