Brehan gave a panel talk at this years American Society of Acupuncturists' national conference. Colleague Will Sheppy of Valley Health Acupuncture interviewed him afterwards about the parallels between biomedicine and TCM in the gut-brain axis and why gratitude, generosity and service are so important in the practice of medicine.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, Brehan Crawford delivered Synchronizing Science and Spirit: Reframing the Gut–Brain Axis through Classical Herbalism and Modern Microbiology. Will Sheppy sits down with him afterward — with Highlights on Dr. Joshua Park (Brea, CA) and...

The body doesn’t choose its operating temperature randomly.

Warmth isn’t just about comfort or calorie burn. It’s part of your defense system. Many microbes struggle to survive at normal human body temperature. That heat acts as a quiet filter.

Lowering temperature may slow certain processes. But it may also change what your internal environment allows to thrive.

Longevity isn’t only about efficiency. It’s about resilience. It’s about preserving the built-in protections that have kept humans adaptable for thousands of years.

The question isn’t just how to slow aging.

It’s what you might be weakening in the process.

For a long time, many women with chronic illness have been told their symptoms were vague, stress-driven, or unexplainable.

But research continues to uncover more layered interactions between viruses, the immune system, and the gut environment. Epstein-Barr Virus is common. Most of us carry it. The difference often lies in how the body regulates it.

When the internal terrain is balanced, viruses tend to stay quiet. When inflammation rises and the gut environment becomes disrupted, reactivation becomes more likely. The immune system responds. Symptoms follow.

This isn’t about fear. It’s about context.

Healing doesn’t start with chasing a label. It starts with supporting the terrain that determines how the body handles what it already carries.

When that foundation strengthens, the story can change.

Pregnancy has a way of inviting opinions. Especially around food.

But iron status isn’t determined by identity alone. It’s shaped by absorption, inflammation, and the health of the gut environment that helps regulate both.

Diet absolutely matters. And so does terrain. When certain microbes overgrow or inflammatory signals rise, iron handling can become impaired regardless of what’s on the plate.

Health isn’t about belonging to the “right” tribe. It’s about supporting the conditions that allow your body to function well.

Sometimes flexibility isn’t a compromise. It’s wisdom.

Especially when another life depends on it.

Bryan Johnson I think many of your insights and research are great and while I’m skeptical that humans can live forever, I love it that you’re trying to help people be healthy and happy along the journey of this weird and beautiful thing we call life. That being said, there is a 2,000 year old classical text in Chinese Medicine called the Shang Han Lun, AKA “Treatise on Disease Cause by Cold”. And I think we would be wise to heed its advice for health and longevity.

The body is more interconnected than we tend to realize.

Digestion isn’t just about breaking down food. The liver, bile, microbes, and hormones are all part of the same conversation. What happens in the gut doesn’t stay in the gut.

Certain bacteria can transform compounds your body already makes into forms that influence hormone balance. Not in a dramatic, overnight way. But in subtle, regulatory ways that add up over time.

This doesn’t mean chasing a single strain or forcing change. It means supporting diversity, cooperation, and overall gut resilience.

Even the smallest byproducts of digestion are part of a larger story. And when that inner ecosystem is balanced, the ripple effects reach further than most people expect.

Your gut and nervous system are in constant conversation. When that connection is strong, digestion feels smoother, energy is steadier, and your mind feels clearer.

When it’s disrupted, the symptoms can feel confusing. Anxiety. Fatigue. Brain fog. A body that feels on edge for no obvious reason.

But these patterns aren’t random. They’re often signals that the gut environment is under strain and the nervous system is responding accordingly.

The body doesn’t lose balance without a reason. It adapts. It protects. It tries to compensate.

Healing isn’t about forcing calm. It’s about restoring the conditions that allow the system to regulate itself again.

For a long time, the idea that the gut shapes the rest of the body sounded overly simple. Now we’re watching modern immunology circle back to it.

Your immune system isn’t just a defense mechanism. It’s a regulator. A communicator. And much of that communication begins in the gut.

When the inner environment is diverse and supported, the signals that tell the immune system to calm down are stronger. When that terrain is disrupted, regulation becomes harder.

Healing doesn’t start with suppressing the army. It starts with tending the garden that teaches it when to stand down.

Support the foundation, and the rest of the system often follows.
