Friends for a lifetime
Jeanne and Sylvia have been friends since their high school days in 1946. They are both in their 90s now. After high school, Jeanne married and moved away from McMinnville, Oregon, for a few years but came back in 1953. Sylvia was playing cards with some of Jeanne’s friends, unbeknownst to her, and Jeanne just happened to drop in. Since that time, they have renewed their friendship. They have played hand and foot and bingo several times a week ever since. Jeanne lost her husband first and then Sylvia. They needed more companionship, so they started visiting or calling each other just about every day. Jeanne said they have never quarreled or said a cross word to each other. They are just so well-suited. Recently, Sylvia moved into City Center, and now she lives right around the corner from Jeanne’s room. “It is just so convenient,” Jeanne says.

Wilma is a licensed elementary school teacher and just loves children. She taught kindergarten and first grade in Washington for 4 years. After that time, she was taking care of a friend's children when the friend said "If you open a daycare then I can go to work and start my business." So Wilma started a daycare business with her husband and ran it for 17 years. She was licensed for 12 children. Her husband was known as “Papa Ed” while she was known as “Annie Mo.” She shared a funny story of when the older children would ask her every day who was going to watch them during nap time. They wanted to know if it was Papa Ed. They knew that Papa Ed would also be asleep within 5 minutes, so the children could goof off. The children never thought she knew this. Wilma said she liked to keep track of her children in daycare to see what they did with their lives. She was so happy when they became a pharmacist or an artist. She was just thrilled to see them productive citizens concerned about ecology and being kind to others. Finally, physical limitations kept Wilma from continuing her business, but she has very fond memories.
