Ice Skating in Summer?! ⛸️🌞

For this activity, you will need:
🍽️ 2 paper plates
❄️ A smooth floor

How to play:
⛸️ Step on paper plates and “slide” to ice skate!
⛸️ Challenge your child’s balance and coordination by skating forward, sideways, and backwards.

Make it a bigger challenge!
🪙Try placing coins on the floor and a piggy bank 10-15’ away.
🪙While standing on ice skates, squat to retrieve a coin, then slide to the bank to deposit it.

❄️”Ice skating” can help develop strength in the trunk and legs, especially if you add squats and different directions! ⛸️ Children develop body awareness, as they need to keep contact with the plates to avoid losing an ice skate.

Why wear one birthday crown when you can wear three?! 👑 We feel so lucky to have celebrated your special day with you. 🥳🎂

As the weather warms up, it’s a great time for outdoor play!

For this activity you need:
☀️Good weather
🧴Sunscreen
💧Water bottle
📦Box of inexpensive outdoor toys
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒Play partners (a parent in need of stress relief is best!)

Playing outdoors offers so many opportunities to grow motor, communication, and executive functioning skills while improving mental health and emotional regulation. Kids that play outdoors after dinner are better equipped to calm their bodies for nighttime routines and sleep. 😴

If your child would rather be indoors on a sunny day, set up a special box of toys specifically for outdoor use. Make a routine of taking the box outside after dinner for family play time. Items for the box can be low cost but high value! Ours includes a jump rope, bubbles, cones, a ball, sidewalk chalk, and velcro catch/throw toy. 🫧🏀🖍️

If your child has difficulty transitioning from outdoors to indoors, establish clear expectations beforehand. A time-timer that uses clock hands (rather than digital) helps a child see time passing and teaches them to anticipate the end of the activity. ⏰

After an evening of outdoor play, relax indoors with quiet, low-tech activities such as reading books together or coloring. The combination of fresh air and physical activity, followed by calming, screen-free time is an ideal setup for a good night’s sleep for all! 📚✍️

Do you visit our clinic? Look for our box of outdoor toys just inside our main door. Feel free to use the toys with a parent or a friend! 💚

☔April showers bring May flowers!🌼Here’s a heavy work activity for your little gardener to try! 🧑🏼‍🌾🌷

What you need:
🧺A laundry basket or other similar container
💪🏼Something heavy - a weight, weighted blanket, or cans work well
🌟Bean bags - or other small items to be your flowers

Set it up:
🌺Get the garden ready - spread out bean bags around the room
🪻Fill your wheelbarrow - put the weighted material at the bottom of your basket

How to play:
🌹Be the gardener: Tell your child to collect a specific color “flower” while pushing their wheelbarrow. “Pick a yellow flower!” Repeat until you’ve picked all the flowers!
🌻Be the florist: Tell your child where to deliver their flowers, pushing their wheelbarrow. “Deliver a blue flower to the couch!” Repeat until you’ve delivered all the flowers!

Heavy work activities provide proprioceptive input, providing feedback from your joints and muscles to your brain. This helps the body organize sensory information and body position, promoting attention and self-regulation!

🐇🐣With Easter just around the corner, this is a great time to learn how to target language with a classic holiday activity!💐🌷

With a simple egg hunt, you can target:

🐥DESCRIBING: Can your child use prepositions to describe where the egg is hiding? The egg is IN the basket. The egg is UNDER the chair.

🥚LABELING: Can you identify the shape, color, or item hidden inside the Easter egg? The shark lives in the ocean. Inside the egg is a blue star or a purple circle.

🐰EXPANDING UTTERANCES: As the adult, add on to what your child says. Your child says “egg,” you say “pink egg!”.

At Justabout Pediatric Therapy, we value using real world play, such as an egg hunt, to target meaningful skill development! 💌Contact us to learn more about our speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy services!
