👁️ Fun Fact Fri-yay! 👁️

There are two types of Macular Degeneration. Dry and Wet. We’ve all seen the commercials but what are they!?

Dry AMD you watch and slow progression with a well balanced diet and eye vitamins that are AREDS2 formulation. There is an intraocular injection for geographic atrophy which is a form of Dry AMD, see image #1 below. There are many drugs but our office offers Syfovre for some cases, we manage by documenting the growth of the atrophy and injecting about every 8 weeks in the affected eye. Syfovre is labeled to slow the growth of atrophy, there is no cure for this ocular disease but there are ways we can help preserve your eyesight.

Wet AMD is mainly always treated with intraocular injections. Some of the brands we offer in office are Vabysmo, Eylea, and Lucentis. See images #2, #3, #4 below. These medications help reabsorb the edema or fluid from abnormal blood vessel growth. These are administered on an as needed basis but typically every 28 days until the edema or fluid is resolving/resolved then we extended the amount of time between injections.

So where is the line between Dry AMD and Wet AMD? Well, when you have Dry AMD there is atrophy to the tissue, the body may recognize this and make blood vessels to try and feed the atrophic areas. When this occurs those vessels can become “leaky” and cause edema and fluid. Some people can go all their lives with Dry AMD and it never turn to Wet AMD but others aren’t so fortunate. Thankfully there is treatment for this. Back in the day people would go blind and they would have no clue the reasoning or have the resources available to preserve vision that was remaining, we are very fortunate to have the medical advances we have had.

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month! Here are some key facts about AMD.

🕶️ AMD is one of the leading causes of blindness in the US in patients over 60
🕶️ There are 2 forms of AMD, Dry which is treated with vitamins and a healthy diet and Wet that is treated with ocular injections
🕶️ Smoking is the biggest lifestyle habit risk factor that can be modified
🕶️ Approximately 20 million people in the US have AMD
🕶️ Symptoms include decrease in visual acuity, central blind spot, and line distortion
🕶️ AMD is partly genetic, but if you have a family member with AMD then you have an increased risk yourself

✨ AMD is monitored on an annual basis unless there are changes in appearance or vision changes. In office we monitor changes with vision checks and machines in office to scan your macula and retina.
✨ Give yourself a quick AMD scan on the amsler grid below. Hold your phone about 14 inches from your eyes, about reading distance, if all the lines are straight that’s good. If you have any distortion or missing pieces and it’s different than what you normally see we advise you call you eye healthcare professional for a dilated exam.
