Opera Kansas is thrilled to present Staggerwing, a captivating chamber opera by composer Lisa DeSpain and librettist Rachel J. Peters, at the historic McPherson Opera House on May 29, 2025. This powerful work, winner of the 2020 Zepick Modern Opera Commission, brings to life the inspiring story of Louise Thaden and Blanche Noyes, the first all-female team to compete in and win the 1936 Bendix Trophy Air Race.

Staggerwing celebrates the courage and determination of these trailblazing aviatrixes as they navigated a grueling transcontinental race in a Beechcraft Staggerwing Model C-17, defying the sexism of a male-dominated field. The opera also shines a spotlight on Olive Ann Beech, co-founder of Beech Aircraft and a fierce advocate for women in aviation. With a score that blends 1930s blues, jazz, and Tin Pan Alley influences with classical voice, Staggerwing delivers a vibrant and emotional journey that resonates with modern audiences.
