Hugh, a native of Telfair county, graduated from Telfair County High School in 2001 and went to South GA college to receive an associates degree in chemistry. He was then accepted to South University and completed his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2007. Since then he has worked with several retail pharmacies until fulfilling his lifelong dream of owning his own pharmacy. Hugh and his wife Britney bought Ryals Drug Store in October of 2013, and have worked endless hours to renovate the pharmacy, yet keep the older appeal it was known for. They both want to keep Ryals family-oriented, and want you to feel at home as soon as you walk in the door! So come by and let us help you with all your pharmacy and healthcare needs! Our pharmacy is open today for normal business hours. Delivery services are expected to resume around noon once the weather system clears the area.

Please note that deliveries to some of our rural patients may still be delayed depending on the amount of rainfall in those areas.

Today, we honor and remember Dr. Robert “Mickey” Nelson, a man whose life’s work shaped Ryals Drug Store and the care of this community for generations.

After earning his degree in pharmacy from his beloved University of Georgia, Dr. Nelson devoted more than 4 decades to owning and operating Ryals Drug Store, serving as its steward until 2014. Under his leadership, the pharmacy became a trusted local institution, known for personal service, integrity, and genuine care for every customer who walked through the door.

To many, Dr. Nelson was far more than a pharmacist or business owner—he was a trusted friend and a familiar face behind the counter who genuinely cared about the well-being of this community. He welcomed generations of families through the doors, offering not only his expertise but also a firm handshake, steady eye contact, a warm smile, and time to listen. To him, caring for people was never just a profession; it was a calling. Even after passing the torch to the next ownership, you could almost always find Mickey sitting in the front of the store on “Mickey’s Bench,” reading his newspaper or inviting someone to sit down and share a conversation. His belief that pharmacy was about relationships as much as medicine—paired with his strong work ethic, generosity, and compassion—helped shape the values Ryals Drug Store continues to stand on today.

Dr. Nelson passed away on February 25, 2026, leaving behind a lasting legacy of service that lives on within these walls and throughout the community he faithfully served. We are deeply grateful for the foundation he built and the example he set, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Nelson family and all who were touched by his life and service.

Rest in peace, Dr. Nelson. Your legacy lives on.

📣 Weather Alert for Ryals Drug Store ❄️

Due to potential winter weather, Ryals Drug Store will be open for in-store service only on Saturday, January 31, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

For the safety of our drivers, no deliveries will be made on Saturday.

All deliveries will resume on Monday, February 2.

⚠️ If conditions worsen, a full closure may be necessary. We strongly encourage customers to pick up prescriptions today (Friday), if possible.

Outside of work, Denise enjoys spending her free time riding motorcycles with her husband, making memories and enjoying the open road together.
