The Margherita Pizza Philosophy of a Whole Health Orthopedic Institute Knee Replacement

Not all pizzas are created equal.
And neither are knee replacements.

In Naples, a true Neapolitan Margherita pizza starts with the right ingredients.

Double-zero flour.
San Marzano tomatoes.
Fresh mozzarella.
Fresh basil.
Extra virgin olive oil.
A carefully prepared dough.
A blazing wood-fired oven.

Perfect timing.
And pride in every single step.
No shortcuts.
No cheap ingredients.
No rushing the process.

That's how I view knee replacement surgery at Whole Health Orthopedic Institute.

Yes, muscle and tendon-sparing surgery matters.
For me, that includes a sub-vastus approach (Jiffy Knee™) because avoiding muscle and tendon cutting can lead to less pain and an easier early recovery.

But that's only one ingredient.

The implant position matters.
That's why I use kinematic alignment to restore more natural anatomy and ligament balance.

The implant design matters.
That's why I prefer a medial pivot philosophy that more closely replicates normal knee mechanics.

And just like a great pizza isn't simply about the dough or sauce, a great recovery is about far more than the operation itself.

It's how everything comes together.

That's where THE Orthopedic Journey™ comes in.

Fifteen years of refining what works best before surgery, during surgery, and most importantly after surgery.

Education.
Preparation.
Guidance.
Recovery.
Support.

And now, with the rollout of both our new TOJ app and THE Orthopedic Journey™ Handbook, patients are receiving a level of education and guidance that I honestly believe is unlike anything else available in orthopedic care today.

Together, they work hand-in-hand.

The app delivers daily personalized guidance, milestone tracking, communication, and over nine hours of procedure-specific educational videos tailored to where each patient is in their journey.

The handbook reinforces the process with a tangible roadmap patients and families can hold, review, highlight, and revisit throughout recovery.

Digital guidance.
Physical guidance.
Daily structure.
Constant reinforcement.

Just like the finishing touch of fresh basil and olive oil on a true Neapolitan pizza, these final details elevate the entire experience.

Because when every ingredient matters, people can feel the difference. 🍕

Country Roots Don’t Fade

Last night was a great night.

I spent about five hours last night doing yardwork at our family retreat… just a couple hundred yards from where I grew up.

Same ground. Same trees. Same quiet.

And it hit me… I’m still that country kid.

I love getting into the city with Karen and the boys. The energy, the events, the change of pace. But if I’m being honest… the stillness out here is what resets me. It’s familiar in a way that nothing else is.

Growing up, we had about six acres. My parents kept it immaculate. And we were part of that… whether we liked it or not at the time.

Mowing. Trimming. W**d eating. Over and over again.

I’m pretty sure we cut that grass two or three times a week.

Back then, it felt like a chore.

Last night, it felt like a privilege.

About halfway through, my parents came down and just sat and watched. That moment stuck with me. There was a sense of pride… but also a quiet awareness that time is moving. They’re in their golden years now, and things aren’t as easy for them physically.

But they were there.

Watching.

Smiling.

And for a second, it felt like nothing had changed.

When I finished, I walked around the pond, grabbed a cold beer, and just took it all in. The sun dropping. The yard looking the way it should. That same feeling I remember as a kid… when everything was done and you could finally sit back and appreciate it.

Only now, I understand it differently.

It wasn’t just about the yard.

It was about the work. The discipline. The pride in creating something you take care of.

My parents gave that to me. To all of us.

Simple living. Hard work. Taking ownership.

Funny how the things you used to dread become the things you look forward to.

As I get closer to 50, it really does feel like it all goes fast. Not in a dramatic way… just quietly, steadily… like that sunset last night.

Grateful for the chance to work.

Grateful for the chance to move.

Grateful for where I came from… and the people who built that foundation.

Country roots. Always.

A Case of the Mondays: In a GOOD Way!

Most people hear Monday morning like it’s a fire alarm.

Back to work.
Back to the grind.
Back to “have to.”

I woke up today with a completely different feeling.

It’s that same energy I used to feel before a big high school basketball game. Not fear. Not stress. Something sharper. That quiet buzz in your stomach that says, this matters… and you’re ready for it.

I don’t look at Mondays as something I HAVE to do.

I look at them as something I GET to do.

After a rough night earlier this weekend fighting off a stomach bug, there was something especially powerful about last night. GREAT sleep. Reset. Recharge. Then this morning… coffee in hand, sun just starting to stretch across the sky, driving in with purpose.

That feeling never gets old.

And neither does what I get to do.

I don’t take it lightly when someone trusts me and my team to guide them through one of the most anxiety-provoking moments of their life… surgery. That trust is earned long before we ever step into the OR.

It starts with honest expectations.
It builds through preparation.
It’s reinforced with guidance and support.

Surgery itself? That’s the middle chapter. Brief. Precise. Important, but just one part of a much bigger story.

The real work happens before… and after.

Laying the foundation.
Optimizing the body and mind.
Then guiding patients all the way back to a restored life.

That’s what excites me on a Monday morning.

Helping people through something difficult… and watching them come out stronger on the other side.

That’s a privilege.

And it’s one I don’t take for granted.

I want my boys to find that same feeling someday. Not just a job… but something that pulls them forward. Something that gives them that edge-of-your-seat energy on a Monday morning.

Because when you find that…

Life feels different.

More meaningful.
More fulfilling.
More alive.

How many of you feel that way about your Mondays?

Grateful this morning.
Headed to the hospital.
Ready to go to work.
