The Christmas elves have been hard at work in the office this morning gearing up to spread some cheer and heartfelt joy to our patients this holiday season. πŸŽ„πŸŽβ€οΈ

Sammie's Story: In a season of faith and wonder, Sammie's adoption is a beautiful reminder that Christmas miracles still happen.πŸ’™

At the initial hospice visit, our patient had just moved into an apartment of her own, living alone with her beloved dog, Sammie, whom she sometimes called Sampson. As the hospice role was being explained, it quickly became clear that this living situation was not sustainable for her. Gently and thoughtfully, the conversation was guided toward the possibility of moving to the Marquette Hospice House (MHH).

The patient’s greatest concern was not herself. It was Sammie. She described him as β€œthe only thing in this world that loves me.” Understanding the depth of that bond, the question was asked with care: If a loving home could be found for Sammie, would that make the decision easier? The patient agreed. Sammie was her first priority above all else.

That day ended with the patient quietly pondering her future. But it also ended with something stirring deeply in the heart of our social worker, Ashley. That evening, she went home and spoke with her husband, explaining that something inside her was telling her this was more than just part of the job. This was something they could do...it was something they needed to do.

The next day, she returned to see the patient. It was another difficult day for her, but Sammie remained faithfully by her side. After much thought and discussion with her family, Ashley shared that they would love to give Sammie a home if the patient was comfortable with that. She showed her pictures of her children with their two dogs. The patient’s eyes lit up, and a wide smile spread across her face. Though the decision was incredibly difficult, that moment brought reassurance. That day, the patient agreed to move to the hospice house.

The patient moved into MHH on a Friday. On Monday, Sammie was brought to visit her. They sat together and talked, and the patient was eager to hear how Sammie was adjusting. Photos were shared, along with stories from the weekend about how amazingly Sammie was settling into a lively home with three children and two other dogs. He had even made it through a sleepover with six children showering him with love and attention. Hearing this brought the patient great comfort. She was happy and deeply relieved to know Sammie was thriving and would be well cared for.

One of the wishes the hospice team hoped to fulfill was to have Sammie groomed before the patient passed. We quickly partnered with Jake from Jake’s Dog Detail, who helped make that happen right away.

There were three more visits that week. On the final visit, the patient passed away peacefully with a freshly groomed Sammie at her side. She did not leave this world worried about the one she loved most. She left knowing he was safe, cherished, and in a loving home.πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™
