Erica is an adoptive mom with over 10 years of experience in the adoption community. She is passionate about helping adoptive parents make sense of their children’s difficult behaviors. She has studied trauma, attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, and has training in EMDR. She longs to help other parents who feel that their lives have been challenged by the trauma of their adopted children. She also hopes that through helping parents understand the developmental and emotional impact of trauma on children and provide tools to help them navigate parenting in unchartered waters. Dr. John King is accepting new clients in our Mechanicsburg office for Emerge Counseling. He has 27 years of pastoral experience and comes from a strong Christian worldview. He and his wife are adoptive parents and understand the dynamics of adoption and foster care issues, including the vicarious trauma that parents often deal with. His full-time position is Assistant Professor of Counseling at Liberty University. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Nationally Certified Counselor. There are six major core longings that every human being has in life: safety and security, love, significance, purpose, belonging, and being understood. It is that last one, being understood, that is so, so important these days in our world.
This need to be understood is often missing in the lives of people who are really struggling. But if you can find someone who really, really gets you, it can be a game changer. That is one of the most important jobs for counselors: to actually listen and seek to understand. When we deal with live's most challenging seasons, having someone who gets us, understands us, and who is on our side can be a complete game changer.
