The Mission of the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society is to support the professional interests of neurosurgeons within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. PNS is proud to feature Dr. Malhotra as our next Minds Behind the Mission spotlight. He currently serves as President of PNS, bringing visionary leadership and dedication to advancing neurosurgical care.

Dr. Malhotra is a nationally recognized academic neurosurgeon specializing in spinal oncology and complex degenerative spine disease. He has deep expertise in treating spinal tumors and conditions like disc herniation and spondylolisthesis, using advanced minimally invasive, endoscopic, and robotic techniques to optimize outcomes and recovery.

A Professor of Neurological and Orthopedic Surgery, he has spent over 15 years in leadership at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, including serving as Chief of Neurosurgery and Vice Chair. He has authored 170+ publications and is an internationally recognized researcher focused on improving spine care and advancing new treatment approaches.

Known for his clear communication and compassionate, patient-centered approach, Dr. Malhotra partners closely with patients to guide them through complex decisions. He is consistently recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and is trusted by patients and peers alike for his expertise and care.

February Minds Behind the Mission Spotlight: Dr. Scott Simon
This month, we’re proud to spotlight Scott D. Simon, MD —a leader, innovator, and advocate in the fight against stroke and cerebrovascular disease.

Dr. Simon is a Professor of Neurosurgery, Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery, and Medical Co-Director of the Penn State Health Stroke Program. As a neurosurgeon specializing in complex cerebrovascular disorders, his work sits at the powerful intersection of clinical care, engineering, and translational research.

Recognized nationally for both clinical excellence and research impact, Dr. Simon’s career reflects a deep commitment to pushing the boundaries of neurosurgery—always with patients at the center.

We’re proud to recognize Dr. Mark Iantosca as our January Minds Behind the Mission member spotlight! A dedicated pediatric neurosurgeon at Penn State Health, Dr. Iantosca brings decades of expertise to the treatment of Chiari malformations, syringomyelia, and hydrocephalus.

Beyond the OR, he’s a passionate leader in both clinical care and healthcare administration—championing improved access, clinic operations, and value-based care across systems. His commitment also extends to organized neurosurgery at the state and national levels.

As part of our Minds Behind the Mission series, we are proud to highlight Dr. Jody Leonardo, PNS President-Elect, board-certified neurosurgeon and nationally recognized expert in intracranial and intraventricular neuroendoscopy. Dr. Leonardo specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of complex disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system, including hydrocephalus, intraventricular and pituitary tumors, brain tumors, trauma, infections, stroke, and diseases of the spine. She is especially renowned for her work in minimally invasive endoscopic brain and pituitary surgery and the surgical management of adult hydrocephalus.

Dr. Leonardo currently serves as Professor of Neurosurgery at Drexel University College of Medicine and Program Director of the Neurosurgery Residency at the AHN Neuroscience Institute. She also leads the AHN Occult Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak Center, the AHN Pituitary Center, and the AHN Adult Hydrocephalus Center.

Her leadership, innovation, and dedication truly embody the mission of advancing neurosurgical care across Pennsylvania.

This season, we’re honored to highlight Dr. Ephraim Church, a true leader in the field of cerebrovascular neurosurgery. With dual degrees in psychology and music composition from Northwestern, and a medical doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Church brings a rare blend of scientific precision and creative insight to his practice.

Currently an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Radiology at Penn State Health, Dr. Church directs the Cerebral Revascularization Program and oversees the Cerebrovascular Microsurgery Fellowship. He is also a Fellow of both the AANS and ACS, and recognized for his focused practice in neuroendovascular surgery.

His clinical and research passions include cerebral bypass, moyamoya disease, aneurysm treatment, neurosurgical registry science, and medical ethics. His work is backed by ongoing grant-funded research and more than 50 publications with 2,000+ citations.

With advanced training from Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, and even a neurosurgery registrar year in Australia, Dr. Church exemplifies a global, multidisciplinary approach to care and scholarship. 🙌
