Sharing from a friend who has a small business
The funny thing about being a business owner is that you’re almost not allowed to be human. Wild, right? The moment you make a human mistake, it can become the reason someone gets upset, leaves a bad review, or never comes back.

The general public often expects you to be perfectly joyful, error-free, fast, accommodating, and to offer everything at the lowest price — all without missing a beat. We call that “customer service.”

And while every small business owner I know genuinely tries to live up to that ideal every single day — because it matters to us, it’s often why we started in the first place — we’re still human beings, just like you.

Many of us worked 14+ hours yesterday. We’ve got hundreds of emails waiting, kids home sick, our own personal struggles, and a to-do list that NEVER ends. Most people don’t see that side of it, because it doesn’t serve the moment of their frustration.

Lately, I’ve seen far too many small business owners forced to defend themselves publicly for honest mistakes — shamed online for simply being human. And it honestly breaks my heart. Is this really where we are as a society?

Small businesses are the heartbeats of your communities. They are often the hardest working people you’ll meet. They’re the places you love, the ones that feel like home, that offer an experience rather than just a transaction. They need your support — but they also need your grace.

If a small business ships you the wrong item, let them make it right.
If they don’t respond in 30 minutes, give them time.
If they can’t bend a policy, trust there’s a reason.
If they close for a day because their child is sick, be patient.
If they say something wrong, allow them to correct it.
And if you simply don’t agree with how they do things, just move on — no need to tear them down online.

No small business owner ever wants to disappoint you. But sometimes, it happens. We’re all doing our best.

As we enter the holiday season, please remember to be kind, patient, and understanding — not just with small businesses, but with everyone. The world needs a little more love right now.
