Patricia Katzenmoyer has always wanted to be a nurse. Drawn to helping others and fascinated by science, she began working in health care as a teenager and spent the next 36 years of her career serving her community.

Today, Patricia is a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP) with UPMC Women’s Center for Bladder and Pelvic Health, serving patients in Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg, where she has worked for nearly four decades.

Outside of work, Patricia enjoys time with her family, cheering on their many sports and activities. She treasures annual family beach trips and holiday gatherings filled with home-cooked meals.

Throughout her nursing journey, she has enjoyed listening to patients, meeting them where they are, and walking alongside them through life’s milestones.

"A good day at work is a day where patients feel listened to, heard, and satisfied with their care," Patricia said.

Patricia has recommended the nursing profession to anyone interested — including her own daughter.

Nurses are at the heart of everything we do. This Nurses Week, we’re highlighting UPMC nurses whose expertise, empathy, and commitment help shape exceptional care every single day.

Meet Cayleigh Minter, a senior certified registered nurse practitioner at UPMC in Central Pa., and the winner of UPMC's Advance Practice Award.

When wound care gets complex, Cayleigh is the clinician teams trust. As an advanced practice provider (APP), she sets a high standard for advanced wound care across our region through exceptional clinical skill, collaboration, and forward‑thinking innovation.

Through her work, Cayleigh delivers meticulous, compassionate care tailored to each patient’s needs.
Beyond the bedside, Cayleigh is helping shape what’s next in health. She played a key role in building and expanding Virtual Rounds, a systemwide initiative that enhances interdisciplinary communication, streamlines case review, and broadens access to specialty expertise.

Through her clinical expertise and innovation, Cayleigh is improving patient outcomes today while helping define the future of wound care at UPMC.

Mother’s Day is always a special occasion at the labor and delivery units across UPMC Magee-Womens hospitals. This year, our newborns celebrated in “Sweet as Can Bee” style, dressed in colorful onesies and adorable hand-crocheted bee hats lovingly made by nurses and UPMC Pinnacle Foundation volunteers as part of the annual Mother’s Day tradition.

“At UPMC Magee-Womens, the arrival of every baby is a celebration,” said Alice Lowe, unit director, labor & delivery unit, UPMC Magee-Womens in Central Pa. “We understand the deep emotions that come with welcoming a new life into the world. It is truly a joy to honor these precious moments and an immense privilege to support our families. We wish all mothers a very happy Mother’s Day!”

Meet JoAnne Basom.

As a physical therapy clinical specialist at UPMC Harrisburg, she consistently goes beyond her role, making a meaningful impact on infants, families, and staff in the NICU.

When recurring pressure injuries appeared in smaller infants, she acted quickly by analyzing bubble CPAP practices, collaborating with vendors and nursing leadership, and implementing changes that significantly reduced injuries. She has further advanced her role by earning the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) certification, partnering with nurses to perform daily skin assessments for high-risk patients.

When the NICU received a limited supply of midline head positioning devices, JoAnne identified their potential to reduce facial edema in infants on bubble CPAP. Her hypothesis proved correct, leading to improved comfort and respiratory outcomes. From this success, JoAnne launched a quality improvement project, secured grant funding, and implemented the device across the NICU.

Through collaboration, research, and a relentless commitment to better care, JoAnne makes a real difference every day. Her impact makes her a truly deserving recipient of the Champion of Nursing Award.

Congratulations, JoAnne!

Throughout Nurses Week, we’re spotlighting nurses who go above and beyond to deliver exceptional care and support their colleagues.

Dana Diehl, RN, has spent the last five years making a meaningful difference as an oncology nurse navigator at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center-Mechanicsburg. Inspired by her parents' careers in health care, she knew early on that nursing was where compassion and connection met purpose.

“In oncology, you build deep bonds with patients and their families, serving as a trusted guide through some of life’s most challenging moments,” Dana says. “While the work can be emotionally demanding, there’s nothing quite like the joy of seeing a patient ring the bell after their final chemotherapy treatment.”

A good day for Dana is one where teamwork shines and patients feel supported. Working closely with her provider, APP, and support staff, she thrives in an environment built on communication, trust, and shared dedication, and she knows she’s doing her job well when patients say they can always rely on her.

Outside of work, she's a busy mom, proud pet parent, and lifelong dancer who recently returned to ballroom dancing. Her next goal: becoming a nurse practitioner, with plans to continue her career in oncology after graduating this summer.

May is Asthma Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and educating about the triggers, symptoms, and treatment options. Because of a lack of knowledge about asthma, many adults may not know they have it. And a delay in treatment could be deadly. In fact, adults are about 15 times more likely to die of asthma-related conditions than children. That is why it is vital to recognize the symptoms of adult-onset asthma and get treatment.

There is no cure for asthma, but with proper management, you can live a full, healthy life.

Esophageal cancer forms in the inner layer of the esophagus. It can cause the tube to become partially blocked, restricting the ability for food to reach the stomach. While esophageal cancer is rare, it can be deadly if not detected early. In fact, according to the NCI, the five-year survival rate for esophageal cancer in the U.S. is approximately 20%.

If you or a loved one is diagnosed with esophageal cancer, there is hope with UPMC. John Brady, DO, thoracic surgeon, works alongside our collaborative team of experts to provide surgical treatments for patients who will benefit. Our treatment program combines the skills of esophageal cancer doctors and other health care staff in an interdisciplinary and coordinated way.

As we recognize Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month, take a look at some of the warning signs of esophageal cancer and how it can be diagnosed and treated before it’s too late. https://go.upmc.com/2909NS71A
