Learning to use bifocals at four years old?
Just another day of superhero training on See Moore St.
Yesterday, Elsa walked into my dispensary.
Elsa is four years old and very excited to pick up her sparkly blue glasses.
For a young lady about to unleash some amazing powers this weekend, she was definitely going to need them. The weather forecast was calling for 13–20 inches of snow.
Coincidence? I think not.
In fact, maybe the storm percentages kept rising because Elsa was scheduled for this appointment… her first pair of glasses.
But not just any pair of glasses.
Elsa was going straight into the amazing power of BIFOCAL LENSES.
It’s like having a magic wand on your face;one you flick with a simple raise of your chin.
The stakes were high.
She needed to learn how to use these bifocals before Sunday’s big storm.
I put the glasses on her and got down at her eye level.
The lined bifocal lay before her, presenting a choice. A split decision, you might say.
She looked at me above her bifocal.
I said,
“Great job, Elsa. Now let me show you how to really use your powers.”
Elsa stared at me, waiting for her magic instructions.
“Now lift your chin up,” I said,
“and you will have the power to make everything bigger!”
Elsa, a trained princess at only four years old, hung on my every word.
With a powerful stance, she raised her chin slowly and confidently.
And at that moment, her eyes widened with surprise.
She had done it.
I was bigger.
Her hands were bigger.
Everything was bigger.
This was going to be an amazing power in the hands (or eyes) of little Elsa.
Elsa and I continued her training.
I grabbed books. All my books.
She used her powers to make things bigger,
to find the mouse in the cookie book,
to find and press buttons in the Poke-a-Dot book.
I used the construction book to drive vehicles closer to her,
only to see her execute her powers perfectly every single time.
She was the most committed and talented Elsa
I’d ever had the pleasure of working with.
I was exhausted from the work.
But she was empowered.
I got down on my knees and looked her straight in the eyes.
She raised her chin ever so slightly,
with that quiet confidence I’d already come to expect from her.
“With great powers comes great responsibility.”
I said, “Elsa, your training is complete.
Now go out there and bring us a record-breaking snowstorm on Sunday.
You have the power within you and your new sparkly blue bifocal glasses.”
