Recent federal changes are placing tighter caps on student loans for aspiring doctors. Starting July 1, 2026, most medical students will be limited to $50,000 per year in federal loans, with a lifetime cap of $200,000—well below the $200,000 median debt most students currently carry (Chicago Tribune, Aug. 4, 2025).
This shift comes as the physician shortage continues to grow, with the U.S. projected to be short as many as 86,000 doctors by 2036 (AAMC, March 2024).
