Mp4p  - Mental Practice for Performance This is a cognitive behavior-based program focusing on better thinking. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a middle ground. Think Better...Perform Better.

Mental Practice for Performance (MP4P) is a new level of mental health designed for relationships, adolescents, and those who need help with anger, depression, and anxiety. Therapy is great - we all need someone to talk to, someone to work out what's going on in our heads. That is, some people don't necessarily like the word "therapy," they just need someone to talk to and process a few things. In our case, we aim to serve this gap - we're being proactive with mental coaching. We need to re-educate ourselves and especially our young ones to understand resiliency. MP4P fuses Positive Psychology, Performance Psychology, Neuroscience, Emotional Intelligence, Behavior Analysis, and most recently Cognitive Behavior Therapy to offer comprehensive yet affordable mental skills coaching. No psychoanalysis, no pharmacology, just thinking behavior. MP4P has been successful with teams from Godwin High School, Lee-Davis High School, The Steward School, Randolph-Macon College, and Strikers Soccer. We've also individually coached students in Basketball, Swimming, Football, Cross Country/Track, and Soccer.

Cui bono. It's a latin term I picked up from the movie, "The Departed." It means, who benefits? I chose this term today because it reminds me that our thoughts should have purpose. I could have guilt, I could have shame, I could have self-disappointment - but in the end, who benefits? With good mental skills comes good awareness; with good awareness, one can recognize this downward spiral of thoughts. As such, I can learn from guilt, or shame, or disappointment, CHANGE my thought process, and do something or think of something productive. That means CHOOSING a different trajectory. Is that easy? Nope. But it can be done and takes practice. Let me know if you need some help.

Just finished another great book titled, "My Stroke of Genius" by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor. I loved this,

"Unfortunately, as a society, we do not teach our children that they need to tend carefully the garden of their minds. Without structure, censorship, or discipline, our thoughts run rampant on automatic. Because we have not learned how to more carefully manage what goes on inside our brains, we remain vulnerable to not only what other people think about us, but also to advertising and/or political manipulation" (p.152).

This is one of the primary objectives with MP4P - train others HOW to use our brains more effectively. The first step is cognitive awareness - be mindful of what you are thinking.
